Hi everyone! I’m considering a 1997 BMW 5 Series for frequent motorway trips. Can anyone share their experiences with its comfort, fuel efficiency, and reliability? Also, are there any common issues I should be aware of? Thanks!

The 1997 BMW 5 Series (E39 generation) is often praised for its elegant blend of comfort, performance, and solid build quality, especially for frequent motorway trips.

    Comfort
It offers a spacious and cushy ride, with supportive leather seats that many find very comfortable for long-distance driving. The suspension strikes a nice balance between absorbing road bumps and providing confident handling—think of it as the perfect “cushy but sporty” limo for motorway cruising. Sound insulation is decent for a 90s car but expect some engine noise at higher speeds.

    Fuel Efficiency
Fuel consumption depends on engine choice: the 2.5L and 2.8L petrol versions average around 25-30 mpg on motorways, while larger engines like the 3.5L V8 can dip closer to 20 mpg. Not the thirstiest for a car of its size and performance, but not exactly a fuel miser either—so it sips rather than gulps.

    Reliability & Common Issues
While generally robust, the E39 5 Series has some known weak spots. The cooling system is a notorious troublemaker, with plastic components like the expansion tank and water pump impeller prone to cracking or failure—keep an eye on temperature and coolant levels. Electrical quirks are common too, such as window regulator failures, seat motor issues, and occasional sensor gremlins.

The rear suspension bushings and drive shaft center support bearings tend to wear with high mileage, causing knocking or vibrations. Also, the transmission requires regular servicing to avoid gear shift issues.

    Maintenance
Repairs and servicing are more expensive than typical family cars due to German engineering and parts costs, but if the vehicle has been well-maintained with documented service history, these cars can continue running smoothly. Enthusiast owners often tackle minor repairs themselves to save cash.

If you’re looking for motorway comfort with a touch of driving enjoyment, the '97 BMW 5 Series delivers nicely—provided you’re mindful of its quirks and upkeep needs. It’s a car that rewards an owner who’s willing to invest in maintenance and enjoy a classic, premium driving experience with a bit of old-school charm. Just be ready for the occasional “German engineering surprise” and a love affair with coolant top-ups! đŸ›ŁïžđŸš—đŸ’™

The BMW 5 Series E39 (1997) is an excellent choice for the highway, renowned for its comfort and handling. However, it requires a high investment in maintenance.

    Pros and Fuel Economy
    - Comfort: Excellent for long trips (excellent noise insulation and smooth ride).
    - Highway Fuel Consumption: Good (7.5-9.0 l/100 km) for 6-cylinder engines, if they are in good working order.

    Major Problems (Expensive Repairs)
    - Cooling System (Critical!): The biggest weakness. Plastic parts wear out (water pump, reservoir, radiator). Be sure to check if it has been completely replaced. Overheating is fatal to the engine.
    - Suspension: Worn Thrust Arm Bushings cause looseness in the steering.
    - Electrical: Issues with "dead pixels" on the dashboard and with the window controls.

Look for a car with a proven service history (especially for the cooling system). Buying a cheap E39 guarantees high repair costs.
