Replacement: brake shoes – VW POLO PLAYA. AUTODOC recommends:
- Replace brake shoes as a set on an axle. This will ensure efficient braking.
- The replacement procedure is identical for brake shoes on the same axle.
- Please note: all work on the car – VW POLO PLAYA – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
- Step 1Open the bonnet. Unscrew the brake fluid reservoir cap.Step 2Secure the wheels with chocks.Step 3Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
- Step 4Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.Step 5Unscrew the wheel bolts.AUTODOC recommends:Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW POLO PLAYA
- Step 6Remove the wheel.
- Step 7Remove the wheel hub nut cap. Use a crowbar. Use a hammer.
- Step 8Remove the cotter pin securing the hub nut. Use a crowbar. Use a flat screwdriver.
- Step 9Unscrew the hub nut. Use a drive socket #30. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 10Remove the brake drum assembled with the wheel hub bearing.
- Step 11Clean the hub bearing mounting seat. Clean the hub. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
- Step 12Remove the hold-down spring. Use round-nose pliers.
- Step 13Remove the upper return spring of the brake shoes. Use round-nose pliers.
- Step 14Remove the brake shoe hold-down cup. Use a brake shoe retaining spring compressor.
- Step 15Compress the wheel cylinder. Use water pump pliers.
- Step 16Remove both shoes from the mounting bracket. Use a crowbar.Replacement: brake shoes – VW POLO PLAYA. Tip from AUTODOC experts:Don't press the brake pedal after removing the rear brake drum shoes. This will cause the piston to fall out of the brake cylinder, leakage of brake fluid and depressurization of the system.
- Step 17Remove the lower return spring of the brake shoes.
- Step 18Disconnect the parking brake cable. Use a crowbar.
- Step 19Remove the brake shoe adjuster lever.Step 20Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever. Use round-nose pliers.
- Step 21Install the brake shoe adjuster lever.
- Step 22Install the brake shoes on the working brake cylinder on the bracket and on the brake-support plate bracket.
