How to change a front shock strut on ALFA ROMEO 147 (937) [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]

Replacement: suspension strut – Alfa Romeo 147 937. AUTODOC experts recommend:
- Both shock struts of the front suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
- The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right shock struts of the front suspension.
- Please note: all work on the car – Alfa Romeo 147 937 – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
- Step 1Open the bonnet.
- Step 2Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
- Step 3Clean the fasteners of the shock strut upper mount. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 4Unscrew the upper fasteners of the shock strut. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 5Secure the wheels with chocks.Step 6Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
- Step 7Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
- Step 8Unscrew the wheel bolts.AUTODOC recommends:Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Alfa Romeo 147 937
- Step 9Remove the wheel.
- Step 10Remove the fastener attaching the brake hose to the shock strut. Use a crowbar.
- Step 11Detach the brake hose from the shock strut.
- Step 12Clean the stabiliser link fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 13Undo the fastening nut that attaches the stabilizer link to the shock absorber fork. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 14Remove the stabilizer rod.
- Step 15Clean the fastening bolt that connects the shock absorber fork with the lower control arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 16Unscrew the fastening bolt that connects the shock absorber fork with the lower control arm. Use a combination spanner #19. Use a drive socket #19. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 17Clean the control arm fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 18Unscrew the fastener that connects the suspension arm to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 19Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Use a ball joint puller.
- Step 20Remove the fastening bolt.
- Step 21Clean the fastener that attaches the shock absorber fork to the shock strut. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 22Disconnect the ABS sensor wiring.
- Step 23Unscrew the fastening bolt that connects the shock strut with the shock absorber fork. Use a drive socket #Е14. Use a ratchet wrench. Use a tap wrench.
- Step 24Remove the fastening bolt.
- Step 25Detach the shock absorber fork from the shock strut. Use a hammer.
- Step 26Remove the assembled shock strut.
- Step 27Set the shock absorber strut on the spring compressor tool.Replacement: suspension strut – Alfa Romeo 147 937. Professionals recommend:Note that when using a spring compressor, spring coils need to be securely gripped, compressing the spring on the opposite sides.Ensure the correct position of the spring in the retainer.Make sure that the spring coils tightly entered the lock handles.
- Step 28Treat the shock strut rod. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 29Compress the spring.
- Step 30Remove the strut piston rod nut. Use a shock absorber socket DD№6 Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 31Remove the top strut mount.AUTODOC recommends:Replacement: suspension strut – Alfa Romeo 147 937. Carefully inspect the mount, the boot, and the bump stop of the shock absorber. Replace if necessary.
- Step 32Release the coil spring.
- Step 33Remove the spring.
- Step 34Remove the shock absorber dust cap and the bump stop.
- Step 35Remove the old shock absorber from the hydraulic coil spring compressor.Replacement: suspension strut – Alfa Romeo 147 937. AUTODOC experts recommend:Before installing a new shock absorber you should pump it manually 3-5 times.
- Step 36Install the new shock absorber on the hydraulic coil spring compressor.
- Step 37Install the dust sleeve and the bump stop on the new shock absorber.
- Step 38Install the spring on the shock absorber.
- Step 39Compress the spring.Step 40Install the upper strut mount and the strut mount bearing.
- Step 41Tighten the shock strut piston rod nut. Use a shock absorber socket DD№6 Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 35 Nm torque.Replacement: suspension strut – Alfa Romeo 147 937. AUTODOC recommends:Check to make sure the spring is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment.
- Step 42Decompress the spring.
- Step 43Treat the shock strut rod. Use copper grease.
- Step 44Remove the assembled shock strut.
- Step 45Clean the mounting seats of the shock strut. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
