Replacement: coil springs – VW TRANSPORTER V Bus (7HB, 7HJ, 7EB, 7EJ, 7EF). Tip from AUTODOC:
- Both coil springs of the front suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
- The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right coil springs of the front suspension.
- Please note: all work on the car – VW TRANSPORTER V Bus (7HB, 7HJ, 7EB, 7EJ, 7EF) – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
- Step 1Open the bonnet.Step 2Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.Step 3Remove the windscreen wiper arm nut covers. Use a flat screwdriver.
- Step 4Clean the fasteners of the wiper arms. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 5Unscrew the fasteners of the windscreen wiper arms. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 6Remove the wiper arms.
- Step 7Remove the cowl grille seal.
- Step 8Raise up and remove the cowl grille.
- Step 9Remove the shock strut mount cap.
- Step 10Clean the upper fastener of the suspension strut mount. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 11Loosen the upper fastener of the shock strut mount. Use HEX No.H7. Use a drive socket #21. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 12Secure the wheels with chocks.Step 13Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
- Step 14Clean the fastener of the driveshaft. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 15Loosen the fastener of the driveshaft. Use a drive socket #30. Use a tap wrench.
- Step 16Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.Step 17Unscrew the wheel bolts.AUTODOC recommends:Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW TRANSPORTER V Bus (7HB, 7HJ, 7EB, 7EJ, 7EF)
- Step 18Remove the wheel.
- Step 19Clean the stabiliser link fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 20Unscrew the fastener connecting the stabilizer link to the shock strut. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 21Remove the stabilizer rod.
- Step 22Disconnect the wiring and the brake hose from the bracket on the shock strut.
- Step 23Unscrew the fastener connecting the drive shaft to the wheel hub. Use a drive socket #30. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 24Remove the fastening nut.Step 25Clean the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.AUTODOC recommends:Replacement: coil springs – VW TRANSPORTER V Bus (7HB, 7HJ, 7EB, 7EJ, 7EF). After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.Wear protective goggles.Wear a respirator.
- Step 26Unscrew the ball joint fastening to the steering knuckle. Use XZN #14. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 27Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Use a crowbar.
- Step 28Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
- Step 29Remove the drive shaft.
- Step 30Clean the fasteners connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 31Unscrew the fasteners connecting the suspension strut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 32Remove the fastening bolts.
- Step 33Release the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a special drive socket to remove the shock absorber. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 34Disconnect the steering knuckle from the shock absorber strut.
- Step 35Unscrew the top fasteners of the suspension strut mount.AUTODOC recommends:VW TRANSPORTER V Bus (7HB, 7HJ, 7EB, 7EJ, 7EF) – To avoid injury, hold the suspension strut while unscrewing the fastening bolts.Step 36Remove the suspension strut.
- Step 37Set the shock absorber strut on the spring compressor tool.Replacement: coil springs – VW TRANSPORTER V Bus (7HB, 7HJ, 7EB, 7EJ, 7EF). AUTODOC experts recommend:Note that when using a spring compressor, spring coils need to be securely gripped, compressing the spring on the opposite sides.Ensure the correct position of the spring in the retainer.Make sure that the spring coils tightly entered the lock handles.
- Step 38Compress the spring.
- Step 39Treat the shock strut rod. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 40Remove the strut piston rod nut. Use a combination spanner #21. Use HEX No.H7. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 41Remove the top strut mount.
- Step 42Remove the shock absorber dust cap and the bump stop.AUTODOC recommends:Replacement: coil springs – VW TRANSPORTER V Bus (7HB, 7HJ, 7EB, 7EJ, 7EF). Carefully inspect the mount, the boot, and the bump stop of the shock absorber. Replace if necessary.
- Step 43Release the coil spring.
- Step 44Remove the spring.
- Step 45Install the spring on the shock absorber.
- Step 46Compress the spring.
- Step 47Install the boot and a bump stop onto the shock absorber.
- Step 48Install the upper strut mount and the strut mount bearing.
- Step 49Tighten the shock strut piston rod nut. Use a drive socket #21. Use HEX No.H7. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 80 Nm torque.
- Step 50Decompress the spring.
- Step 51Treat the shock strut rod. Use copper grease.
- Step 52Remove the assembled shock strut.
- Step 53Clean the mounting seats of the shock strut. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
