Hey everyone, I’m in a bit of a bind here. I lost the key to my 2015 Kia Sorento and I’m struggling to figure out the best way to replace it. Should I go through a dealer, or is there a more cost-effective option? Also, any tips on programming the new key? Thanks!

You need to programmatically delete the old key and add a new one to the on-board computer using a diagnostic stand. You need to do everything correctly.

For replacing the lost key to your 2015 Kia Sorento, you have a few options, each with pros and cons regarding cost, convenience, and programming:

    Dealer Replacement
    - Cost: Typically around $220 to $300 for a new OEM smart key fob, excluding any towing or additional fees.
    - Pros: Guaranteed genuine parts, proper programming, and warranty.
    - Cons: Usually the most expensive option; you may need to tow your vehicle to the dealer for programming since the key must be coded via OBD.

    Automotive Locksmith
    - Cost: Usually $230 to $420 including parts and on-site programming.
    - Pros: Often cheaper than dealers, locksmiths can come to your location and program the key on-site, saving towing costs.
    - Cons: Quality and pricing vary, so check reviews and confirm they have the right equipment (e.g., LAUNCH X431 PRO5 or XTOOL X100 Max) and key blanks for your Sorento.

    Buying Online and Self-Programming
    - Cost: Parts alone can range from $100 to $180 for a key fob, but programming is required.
    - Pros: Cheapest for the key itself.
    - Cons: Programming cannot be done remotely—you must visit a dealer or locksmith with the vehicle. Also, you need to ensure you get the correct key model compatible with your Sorento.

    Programming Tips
    - The key must be programmed by physically connecting a diagnostic tool to your vehicle’s OBD port.
    - You’ll need the vehicle present during programming.
    - Some locksmiths offer mobile programming services, which can be more convenient and cost-effective than dealer visits.
    - If you have the VIN number handy, it helps locksmiths or dealers source the correct key blank and programming code.

    Summary Recommendation
    - If you want the fastest and most guaranteed solution and don’t mind paying a premium, go to the dealer.
    - For a balance of cost and convenience, find a reputable automotive locksmith who can supply and program the key on-site.
    - If you’re comfortable sourcing the key yourself online, buy the correct key fob and then arrange programming separately.

This approach will help you replace your 2015 Kia Sorento key efficiently without overspending.
