Citroen C4 cactus, 69 reg. 14200 miles on clock.

The spanner light came up and I got warning messages saying

ABS braking system fault. Repair needed

Hill start system fault

ESP/ASR system fault. Repair needed

The car is an automatic and when it has been parked for any length of time, even a couple of minutes, when you press ‘start’ it jumps as if the brakes were locked and suddenly freed. It’s really frightening – it jumped so badly that it almost hit the wall in front.

My local garage cannot seem to find out what the fault is but the main dealer can’t fit the car in until 22 DECEMBER!

I cannot be without a car for that length of time due to mobility problems so am reaching out to see if anyone knows what this is.

Mate have you checked the brake switch yourself? It's dead easy to get to on these - passenger footwell, just three plastic rivets to remove. Give it a spray with WD40 and see if that helps. Part number 453467 if you need a new one, about £25 quid.

@L-L-L Could also be a wheel speed sensor playing up. I've seen this before where the sensor or the magnetic ring behind the wheel gets corroded or caked in brake dust. When that happens the ABS can't read the wheel speed properly and goes mental with all the warning lights. Worth checking all four corners for muck buildup.

The automatic jumping thing is defo worrying though. If it's doing that every time you start it, I reckon it's either the parking brake actuator itself or more likely that brake switch sending wrong signals. My neighbour had his C4 Picasso do similar and it was just the switch, sorted it in under an hour.

Honestly I'd be checking that brake switch first before anything else. Dead common fault on Citroens and Peugeots from that era. If your local garage can't find it they're not looking in the right place! It's literally a £25 part and 20 minutes work.

Have you had any battery issues recently? Sometimes if the battery's been flat or terminals are corroded it can cause all sorts of random electrical faults. Worth checking the main fuse box too - seen cases where corroded fuses caused similar problems.

My brother's 2015 C4 had this exact issue last year - ABS light, ESP fault, parking brake error, the works. Turned out to be front left wheel speed sensor. Once that was replaced everything cleared up. About £30-40 for the sensor if you fit it yourself.

That's bang out of order from the main dealer making you wait till December! I'd be ringing round other Citroen specialists mate. Any independent with a proper diagnostic scanner should be able to pull the fault codes and tell you exactly which sensor or switch is playing up.

Quick thing to try - disconnect your battery for about 10 minutes, reconnect it, and see if the symptoms change at all. Sometimes these electrical gremlins just need a reset. Won't fix it permanently but might give you more clues.

Definitely get someone to plug a diagnostic scanner in properly. Should throw up specific fault codes like P0571 for brake switch or C1331 for wheel sensors. Once you know the exact code it's much easier to sort.

I had an old Xsara that did the jumping forward thing and it was terrifying! Turned out the parking brake wasn't releasing fully because of a dodgy brake switch signal. Car thought the brake wasn't pressed so the system was confused. Fixed with new switch and hasn't done it since.

Check behind your wheels too for any visible damage to the ABS sensor wires. They run down near the drive shafts and can get damaged by road debris or corrosion. If a wire's damaged or the sensor's dirty it'll throw all those faults you're seeing.

With only 14k miles on a 69 reg that's frustrating as hell. Should still have some warranty coverage surely? I'd be pushing the dealer harder on that - this is potentially a safety issue. They should be treating it more urgently than December!

My money's on either brake switch or wheel sensor mate. Both are common faults, both are cheap to fix, and both cause exactly the symptoms you're describing. Don't let them fob you off with expensive replacements until they've checked those basics firste basics first!
