Hello everyone,

I need to replace the radiator of my old xsara picasso car, I am currently in the highlands of Scotland and the local garages have no apointments until the end of July2024.

There is no mobile mechanic as the nearests  are in Aberdeen and they do not travel that far.

I will have to scrap the car something that I do not want to do at the moment.

I bought a new radiator and I am thinking I can replace it myself. I watched a tutorial on y tube.

I am not sure if it is possible for a novice to do that . I also have no idea what kind of tools I will need.

Any advice welcome

Totally doable mate! My neighbour replaced his on a similar Picasso model last year, he had no prior experience. You'll mainly need basic socket set (8mm to 13mm), screwdrivers (flat and Phillips), pliers for hose clamps, and a big draining pan underneath. Took him about 3-4 hours taking his time

@user_240090 Honestly its not rocket science but you need patience. Main thing is let the engine cool completely first! Then drain coolant from bottom, disconnect top and bottom hoses, unbolt the radiator (usually just few bolts holding it), pull it out. New one goes in reverse order. Just take photos before removing stuff so you remember where everything goes

I helped my brother do this on his old car couple years back and we managed fine. You'll want to get some new coolant as well, dont reuse the old stuff. Also grab some penetrating oil spray because bolts can be quite rusted on older vehicles like yours. Make sure you have good lighting too, some bolts are awkward to reach

@leo3__1 Exactly! And dont forget wheel chocks if you're jacking the front up for better access. I did mine on ramps which made life easier. The trickiest bit is those plastic clips - they can snap easily so be gentle

Did this job meself about 6 months ago on a different motor. One tip - have loads of rags ready cos coolant will spill everywhere even after draining. Wear old clothes and gloves. Also watch out for the radiator fan connections, theres usually electrical plugs that need disconnecting first

@user_240090 mate you've already got the new radiator which is half the battle. For Xsara Picasso specifically you might need to remove the air filter box to get proper access. My cousin did his and said that was the annoying part but once thats out the radiator just lifts out

@fish-chips Good shout on the fan! I forgot to unplug mine first time and nearly ripped the wires out like an idiot 😅 Also @user_240090 if its an automatic gearbox theres extra transmission cooler lines connected to the radiator - you'll need a line wrench for those, regular spanners can round them off

Honestly for Scotland in winter Id say go for it rather than scrapping. You've watched tutorials already so you know what youre getting into. Main tools: 8mm-13mm socket set, adjustable wrench, screwdrivers, hose clamp pliers (or regular pliers work), drain tub, funnel for refilling. Maybe £30-40 worth if you dont have them alread

@book_worm 📚 That penetrating oil is essential! I had one bolt completely seized on mine, had to spray it and wait overnight before it finally budged. Nearly gave up and took it somewhere but glad I persevered

My partner actually did our Xsara radiator himself two years ago with just basic tools from a mate. Biggest mistake he made was not having enough coolant ready - had to make a trip mid-job to get more. Get at least 5 litres of the right type mixed 50/50 with distilled water. Youll be fine, just take your time and dont force anything!
