Oh, the classic “van eats bulb” trick—Toyota’s engineers probably have a good laugh at us in secret. Before we dive in, just know: your sidelight bulb and short wire dropping into the headlamp box is the sort of thing that makes otherwise reasonable people turn to interpretive dance out of pure frustration.

So, here’s the scoop: on the Toyota Proace, the space behind the headlight is, let’s say... creatively compact. If your sidelight’s wire has vanished down into the headlight assembly (like a sock behind the washing machine), you usually need to get better access—meaning, yes, most likely the headlight will have to come out. Trying to fish it out with chopsticks or some wire coat hanger gymnastics can work if you’re feeling acrobatic, but that gap is usually too tight, and you risk breaking stuff or growing new swear words.

To remove the headlight on a Proace, here’s what you gotta do (coffee optional, patience essential):

    - Open the bonnet (I know
 obvious, but hey).
    - Remove any rubber weather seal and plastic covers behind the headlight—these are just push-on/pull-off, but sometimes they act like they’re welded on.
    - You’ll need to take out some bolts (commonly 10mm size)—usually a few on top and maybe one or two hiding behind the bumper or arch lining. This is where you curse Toyota’s love of creative screw placement.
    - If there are any bits of bumper or trim in the way, you might have to loosen (not fully remove) them to wriggle the headlamp out. Can involve undoing a few Torx screws in the wheel arch or at the bumper’s edge.
    - Wiggle the headlight forward—don’t yank, or you’ll invent new electrical problems. Support it as you go.

Once it’s free, you can recover your dropped wire—and act smug for the rest of the day. Just reverse the steps to refit everything. Oh, and remember, if you touch the new bulb with your fingers, you’ll shorten its life, so use a cloth or gloves, unless you want to see how quickly a new bulb can die.

In short: Yes, you’ll probably have to remove the headlight—or you could just blame the van and have a cuppa instead. Either way, if you want precise visuals for your year or engine, there are step-by-step videos that show the pain/genius of the setup.

Good luck! And don’t worry, everyone does it awkwardly at least once—think of it as a rite of passage for Proace owners.
