HEY EVERYONE, I’m curious about the new car smell in my 2012 Toyota Camry. I’ve heard it might be linked to harmful chemicals. Has anyone else experienced this? Are there specific materials or components in the Camry that might be a concern? THANKS!

The "new car smell" in your 2012 Toyota Camry primarily comes from a process called off-gassing, where volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted from plastics, synthetic fabrics, adhesives, and other materials used in the car's interior. These VOCs include chemicals like formaldehyde, benzene, brominated fire retardants (BFRs), and phthalates, which are used in components such as seats, dashboards, carpets, and trim.

Why the New Car Smell Can Be a Concern
Health risks: Studies have shown that the levels of some VOCs in new cars can exceed safe exposure limits, especially during longer drives or in hot climates where heat accelerates off-gassing. Chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene are known carcinogens, and brominated fire retardants used in seats and carpets may affect thyroid and brain function.

Materials involved: The Camry’s interior plastics (including PVC-based soft plastics), synthetic fabrics, adhesives, and fire retardants contribute to the smell and chemical emissions. Leather interiors, if present, can also off-gas chromium used in tanning, which has been linked to health concerns.

Duration: The smell tends to fade over months as the VOCs dissipate, but exposure is highest when the car is new or after long periods of being closed up.

    What You Can Do
Ventilate regularly: Keep windows open or use fresh air mode rather than recirculation to reduce VOC buildup inside the cabin.

Clean and maintain: Regular cleaning and avoiding eating inside can help maintain a fresher interior smell.

Air out new cars: When possible, air out the car in a well-ventilated space, especially during hot weather, to reduce VOC concentration.

Aftermarket air purifiers: Some owners use cabin air filters or purifiers designed to reduce VOCs and odors.

Be cautious with strong air fresheners: They may mask the smell but add more chemicals to breathe.

The new car smell in your 2012 Toyota Camry is caused by off-gassing of VOCs from interior plastics, fabrics, adhesives, and fire retardants. While many people enjoy this scent, it does involve exposure to chemicals some studies link to health risks, especially with prolonged exposure in enclosed spaces. Ventilating the car and maintaining cleanliness can help reduce this exposure over time.
