Right-hand traffic (RHT) means vehicles drive on the right side of the road, and the driver’s seat is typically on the left side of the vehicle. This system is used in most countries, including the USA, Canada, and most of Europe.

means you drive on the right side of the road mate, so when youre cruising down the street you stay on the right and oncoming traffic passes you on your left side. most of the world does this actually, like usa canada germany france and basically all of europe

@SportKing 👑 exactly and the steering wheel is on the left side of the car in right hand traffic countries. roundabouts go counterclockwise too which feels weird if youve only driven in uk or australia where everything is opposite

just to add on what the others said, about 66% of the worlds population lives in countries with right hand traffic so its definitely the more common system globally. left hand traffic is mostly britain and former british colonies plus japan

@W. B. when you overtake slower cars in right hand traffic you pass them on the left side, thats the standard rule. in left hand traffic countries like uk you overtake on the right instead

had a mate who drove from uk to france last summer and he said the switch from left to right hand traffic was mental for the first hour 😅 kept drifting to the wrong side especially at roundabouts. you really gotta concentrate when switching systems

@Ryan Phillips yeah ive heard that, apparently tourists have higher accident rates in the first few days because they instinctively look the wrong way at intersections. your brain just expects traffic from the side youre used to

also headlights are different for right vs left hand traffic because the beam pattern is asymmetric on low beam. if you use the wrong headlights you end up dazzling oncoming drivers which is dangerous af

@LiCoKe thats actually a good point, didnt know that about the headlights. makes sense tho cause the light needs to illuminate your side of the road without blinding people coming towards you

fun fact sweden switched from left to right hand traffic back in 1967, they called it dagen h or h-day. happened at 5am on september 3rd and they had this whole national celebration thing, declared public holidays and everything to keep traffic low. pretty wild when you think about changing an entire countrys driving system overnight

@Ben Taylor samoa did the same switch in 2009, went from right to left tho not left to right. they did it so they could import cheaper cars from australia and new zealand which are all right hand drive vehicles. had a 3 day alcohol ban and tons of police checkpoints to make sure it went smooth

the reason most of europe uses right hand traffic goes back to napoleon apparently, he spread it during his campaigns. britain kept left hand traffic and then spread that to all their colonies which is why india australia new zealand etc still drive on the left today

@W. B. just remember right hand traffic means stay right, driver sits left side of car, overtake on left, roundabouts anticlockwise. signs are usually on the right side of the road too so you can see them better from the drivers seat

biggest thing is just being consistent with whatever system your country uses. doesn't really matter if its right or left hand traffic as long as everyone follows the same rules, otherwise youd have chaos on the roads

@JackWood exactly mate, rotterdam had no fixed rules until 1917 and apparently it was total traffic chaos until the police enforced right hand traffic. cant have half the people driving on one side and half on the other lol
