I would appreciate some advice please, we have a meriva B which we have had since new it has 47000 miles on the clock and has been well looked after.

It is becoming increasingly more difficult to select first and reverse gears, if you select third then go for first its ok, I am sure the clutch is ok (you can hear it disconnect the drive to the gearbox when depressed and the pedal feel is good).

is it possible to change the gearbox oil?  is there any adjustment to the gear linkage?

Thanks in advance.

For your Meriva B with difficulty selecting first and reverse gears but feeling the clutch operates normally, the likely cause is wear or issues in the gear linkage rather than a clutch or internal gearbox fault. This is a common problem in Vauxhall Merivas where the gear selector linkage can develop play or wear, causing difficulty in engaging certain gears correctly despite the gear lever physically moving.

    Regarding gearbox oil change:
Yes, it is typically possible and recommended to change the gearbox oil on a manual transmission like yours. Regular gearbox oil changes help remove metal particles and contamination which can prolong gearbox life and improve shifting performance. For the Meriva B's M32 manual gearbox, the recommended oil is usually 75W90 gear oil with a capacity around 2.2 to 2.5 liters depending on the gearbox generation.

On gear linkage adjustment or repair:
The gear linkage can sometimes be adjusted or repaired if worn. However, more commonly worn or stretched parts of the linkage assembly need to be replaced to restore crisp gear selection. Replacing the gear linkage bushings or cables often resolves these issues, and is usually a less costly and invasive fix compared to internal gearbox workF.

    Summary advice:
    - Check and replace gearbox oil if it has never been changed or is old.
    - Inspect the gear linkage for wear and consider replacing worn parts or the entire linkage assembly.
    - Since clutch operation seems normal, avoid clutch replacement without further clutch-specific diagnostics.
    - If unfamiliar with gearbox and linkage maintenance, seek a mechanic experienced with Vauxhall/GMC gearboxes for inspection and repair.

This approach usually restores gear selection smoothness without costly gearbox internal repairs.

    Hello
I too have suffered from difficulty engaging gears, I applied Copper Slip to the linkages on the gearbox and the linkages from the gear lever. Selecting gears is now smooth
