front struts upper space tolerance

VW GOLF III Cabriolet (1E7) 1.8@6oyearVWFan Sep 21, 2022MemberAfter changing the front struts due to noise and the large space which presented itself between the upper mount and the car’s body, It rides much better but there remains a space between the top plate and the “body or fender”. A local VW shop says 1/4 inch is acceptable….. I believe factory flush is preferred And how do I get it there?Thank you
