I’m looking into getting a used Fiat 500, but I’ve heard that some model years have more issues than others. Does anyone have experience with specific Fiat 500 years to avoid? I’m trying to make sure I pick a reliable one! Any insights on common problems for certain years, or which ones are generally considered more dependable, would be super helpful. Thanks!

When choosing a used Fiat 500 (2007 - ...), it is worth considering the features of different versions to avoid potential problems.
Models to be wary of / their common problems:
    - 0.9 TwinAir: This two-cylinder turbo engine, although interesting in concept, often has high oil consumption. Problems with the MultiAir unit (electro-hydraulic valve control) are also common, which can manifest itself in noise, vibration and uneven engine operation. There are cases of problems with the timing chain and turbocharger. It is more demanding in terms of oil quality and timely replacement.
    - 1.4 16v (naturally aspirated): This engine is also known for its high oil consumption – the manufacturer even stated that up to 400 grams per 1000 km can be considered normal. Minor problems with the ignition system or fuel pump may occur, leading to starting difficulties.
    A more reliable option:
    - 1.2 8v FIRE: This is the simplest, most reliable and time-tested engine in the Fiat 500 range. It is less finicky to maintain and less likely to cause serious problems.
Its main ‘ailments’ (ring wear, throttle valve contamination, engine mount wear) are usually not critical and inexpensive to repair. It runs on a belt-driven timing system.
    Gearbox:
    - Dualogic (MTA) robotised gearbox: This gearbox is best avoided unless you are sure of its full service history. It is often jerky, and repairs to the clutch and actuators can be expensive. A manual gearbox is preferable.
Regardless of the version you choose, always have a full computer diagnostic check and a thorough inspection of the car before buying.
