EGR recall fault leading to engine failure

Has anybody known an EGR fault to cause a full engine failure?
My 1 series needs a new engine and the dealership/BMW UK won’t help towards the cost because they say it doesn’t relate to the faulty EGR. However they couldn’t say exactly what the engine failure does relate to … without further investigation at my expense. Is this right?
