EGR recall fault leading to engine failure BMW 1 Hatchback (F20)

Hi All 


Has anybody known an EGR fault to cause a full engine failure?


My 1 series needs a new engine and the dealership/BMW UK won’t help towards the cost because they say it doesn’t relate to the faulty EGR. However they couldn’t say exactly what the engine failure does relate to 
 without further investigation at my expense. Is this right?
