EGR????

Having EGR symptoms, limp mode, running rough, black smoke etc.
This is intermittent I could park and start up and its perfect, drive round for miles no problem, stop and restart and its back again.
I have stripped and cleaned egr and inlet manifold and all ancillary pipework, still no difference.
Is there other places I should start looking at.
I just started up and unplugged electric to egr and nothing happened, I dont know if anything should happen on cold start and tick over.
Should I buy used egr valve and try that?
I have ordered new solenoid for egr but before I open and try it is there other things to try to isolate the fault. Have tried new map sensor but no difference.
