bilstein b6 vs b8: which should I choose?

Bilstein B6 vs B8: I’m wondering what the difference is between B6 and B8 struts. Does anyone know? I’ve decided on Bilsteins because I want something reliable that will last.

I’ve got a 128i that has M Sport suspension and I’m not planning to replace the original springs.

I’d appreciate any advice, cheers!

If you have the original M Sport springs, you should go for B6. B6 struts are designed to work with springs that don't lower as standard, while B8 is for springs that do. The main difference is that B6 has a longer body than the B8. The B8 dampening is around 5 to 10% stiffer to make up for the reduced shock travel.

The main difference between Bilstein B6 and B8 struts is their length and intended spring compatibility. The Bilstein B6 shocks have the same overall length as the original equipment (OE) dampers and are designed to work with OEM springs without lowering the car. They provide a sporty ride and improved performance while keeping the original suspension height. In contrast, the Bilstein B8 shocks are shorter and specifically designed to be used with lowering springs or vehicles that come with lowered suspension from the factory. The B8 has about 5-10% stiffer damping to compensate for the reduced shock travel due to the shorter length.

Since you have a BMW 128i with M Sport suspension and plan to keep the original springs without lowering, the Bilstein B6 would be the more suitable choice. The B6 is made to work with stock springs and provides better body control and damping without sacrificing comfort due to extra suspension travel. Using B8 with OEM springs may result in non-optimal damping and potential issues with bump stops, as B8 bump stops are integrated and shorter, made for lowered setups.

    In summary:
    - Bilstein B6: Same length as OE dampers, designed for stock springs, softer daily ride, more suspension travel.
    - Bilstein B8: Shorter length, designed for lowering springs, stiffer damping, less suspension travel.

For your M Sport 128i with OEM springs, Bilstein B6 is recommended for reliability, lasting performance, and ride quality without replacing springs.
