Has any one drained and re-filled the auto transmission oil on there Musso yet?

Looking at the sump pan on the bottom of the gear box i can see 2 plugs, one i assume is a drain plug and the other to re-fill? can any one explain to me how to re- fill the transmission and are any special tools needed?

Ha! Legendary question. Gotta love peering under the Musso and seeing not one, but TWO mysterious plugs—almost like the engineers wanted to spice up your day in the driveway!

So, here’s how it goes when you’re draining and refilling the auto transmission oil on your Musso (and, buddy, you won’t need a wizard’s hat, just the right tools and a bit of patience):

First off, always start by getting the car on level ground (and do your best not to park on the lawn... the oil deserves better). The two plugs you see underneath? Usually, the bottom-most plug is your drain plug (for old fluid to escape with maximum drama), and the other, higher up on the side, is the fill plug—kind of like the “in” door at a dodgy nightclub.

    To drain:
    - Pop the drain plug (14mm socket is common—double-check for your specific box).
    - Let all that beautiful, somewhat-dead oil glug out into your catch pan (pro tip: use a catch pan with litre marks; makes life way easier).
    - Once she’s stopped dripping, pop the drain plug back in and snug it up—not hulk tight, just “snug with spirit.”

    To refill:
    - Use the fill plug (usually a 24mm socket on the side of the box).
    - You’ll want a cheap transfer pump or a long funnel, because gravity is less helpful than you’d think.
    - Pump, squirt, or pour in the exact amount of fresh fluid you got out (follow your measurements!). Don’t just guess unless you want to find new ways to kill a transmission.

    Getting the level right:
    - The pros check the transmission level with the engine running and up to temp—sometimes there’s even a separate check plug (usually a weirdo little Allen bolt in the sump). You take this out with the car running and up to temp: a slight dribble means “just right,” a Niagara means “too full,” and nothing means “not enough—add a splash!”.
    - For the exact temp and procedure, check your manual or a dedicated scan tool—but if you don’t have one, just aim for as close as possible to what you took out, and never overfill.

    Special tools?
    - Nothing too fancy—ratchet set and a transfer pump are your best mates here. Maybe some degreaser for when you inevitably tip half a litre on your arm (don’t worry, you’re not alone).
    - If your Musso is fancy and uses electronic level checking (rare, but hey), you might need a scan tool.

    Final tips:
    - Always remove the fill plug FIRST, just in case it’s seized and you end up with a car that won’t refill (ask me how I know).
    - Dispose of old fluid properly, unless your garden gnomes have asked for an oil bath.

So, no crazy special tools—just basic hand tools, a transfer pump, a good catch pan, and the ability to resist the urge to “just tighten it a little more (snap)”. Go slow, have snacks close by, and may your Musso run smoother than your first cup of coffee!

Seriously, you got this. And if you end up with oily elbows and some new swear words, well—that’s all part of the Musso maintenance charm.
