How to change rear brake drums and rear brake pads on MERCEDES-BENZ A W168 TUTORIAL | AUTODOC
All the parts you need to replace – Brake Shoes for A-Class (W168) and other MERCEDES-BENZ models
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
Step 6
Remove the wheel.
Step 7
Clean the brake drum fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 8
Unscrew the brake drum fastening. Use HEX No.H6. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 9
Remove the brake drum. Use a rubber mallet.
Step 10
Remove the hub bearing protection cap. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 11
Unscrew the wheel hub axle nut. Use a drive socket #30. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 12
Remove the fastening nut.
Step 13
Remove the wheel hub. Use a crowbar.
Step 14
Remove the brake pads retaining clips.
Use round-nose pliers.
Step 15
Pull both brake shoes with the adjuster from the working brake cylinder, avoiding damage to the boots. Use round-nose pliers.
Replacement: brake shoes – Mercedes W168. Tip:
Don't press the brake pedal after removing the rear brake drum shoes. This will cause the piston to fall out of the brake cylinder, leakage of brake fluid and depressurization of the system.
Step 16
Release the parking brake cable. Use round-nose pliers.
Step 17
Remove the retaining springs of the brake pads.
Step 18
Remove both shoes from the mounting bracket.
Step 19
Perform further demounting of the upper retaining spring and the adjuster mechanism. Use pliers.
Step 20
Install the upper retaining springs and adjustment mechanism on new brake shoes.
Step 21
Place the brake shoes so that their inward edges rest on the anchor plate.
Step 22
Install the retaining springs of the brake pads. Use pliers.
Step 23
Secure the parking brake cable.
Step 24
Attach the brake shoes, together with the brake adjuster, to the wheel cylinder.
Step 25
Install the brake pads retaining clips. Use round-nose pliers.
Step 26
Install the wheel hub.
Step 27
Install the fastening nut.
Step 28
Tighten the hub. Use a drive socket #30. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 170 Nm torque.
Step 29
Restake the wheel hub retaining nut. Use a flat metal-working chisel. Use a hammer.
Step 30
Install the hub bearing protection cap. Use a rubber mallet.
Step 31
Clean the hub. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 32
Install a brake drum.
Step 33
Tigten the brake drum fasteners. Use a flat screwdriver. Use HEX No.H6. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 10 Nm torque.
Step 34
Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush.
Step 35
Treat the surface where the wheel rim contacts the brake drum. Use copper grease.
Step 36
Install the wheel.
Replacement: brake shoes – Mercedes W168. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 37
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 38
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 nm torque.
