What are the reasons for a delayed brake response? MERCEDES-BENZ C-Class Saloon (W203) C 200 2.0 Kompressor (203.045) (120 kw / 163 hp) (05.2000 - 06.2002)

I replaced the brake discs and pads on MERCEDES-BENZ W203 because of delayed braking response. In less than a week the problem came back. What could it be?

If you've replaced the brake discs and pads on your Mercedes-Benz W203 but are still experiencing delayed braking response within a week, there are several potential causes worth investigating:

    1. Brake fluid issues: Check the brake fluid level and quality. Air in the brake lines, or contaminated/old brake fluid can cause spongy or delayed brake response. Bleeding the brake system to remove air is essential after brake work.

    2. Brake caliper problems: A sticking or seized brake caliper can cause inconsistent braking. Ensure calipers slide freely and the pistons move smoothly. Sometimes calipers or their guide pins need cleaning, lubrication, or replacement.

    3. Brake disc problems: New discs can sometimes be warped, contaminated, or of poor quality. Warped rotors cause uneven braking and pedal pulsation. Also, improper installation or lack of bedding in the solids can lead to reduced braking performance.

    4. Brake pad quality and bedding: Make sure the pads used are quality-approved for your model. Pads need to be properly bedded in to the discs for optimum friction. Sometimes new pads can cause initial delay until bedded correctly.

    5. Brake system leaks: Inspect brake lines, hoses, and fittings for leaks causing loss of pressure. Even a small leak leads to delayed pedal response.

    6. ABS system: Faults or malfunctions in the ABS module or sensors could interfere with braking feel. Diagnostic scanning can reveal ABS-related issues.

    7. Master cylinder: A failing or internally leaking master cylinder can cause reduced hydraulic pressure and delayed braking.

Since delayed braking is a serious safety concern, a thorough check of the brake hydraulic system, calipers, discs, and ABS components is recommended. Have a trusted mechanic perform a full brake system diagnostic and possibly a pressure test to identify hidden issues.
