The passenger compartment fan is located in the front sundry box.
Access can be made from the passenger side.
We dismantle the glove box, dismantle the air duct of the branch pipes, if any, and get access to the fan.
Disconnect the electrical connector and unscrew the screws with which the fan is attached to the blower unit.

replace blower motor? depends on what it's doing actually. if it's just making a crazy clicking or squealing sound then yeah the bearings are shot. but if it only works on the highest setting and nothing else then it's usually the resistor not the motor itself. check that first before you tear the whole dash apart 😅

had this on my 2014 golf last winter. started with a high pitched whistle then just stopped blowing. i thought it was a fuse but the fuse was fine. i ended up getting a valeo unit since that was the oem for mine. access was under the glovebox, just had to pull back the carpet and remove a few t20 screws. total pain for the back but saved a lot of money doing it myself.

also check for leaves!!! i replaced the motor in my passat because of a vibration and turns out a bunch of debris got into the squirrel cage. could have just cleaned it out but i already had the new bosch motor there so i swapped it anyway. feels way stronger now though.

definitely check the cabin filter while you are in there. if the filter is clogged the motor has to work way harder and it eventually burns out the brushes or the resistor pack. i use mann-filter for the cabin ones, they fit perfectly. if you do the motor yourself just be careful with the plastic clips they get brittle.

i had the exact same issue on my old 2012 focus with about 110k miles on the clock. first it would only work if i hit the dashboard which is a classic sign the brushes are worn out or sticking. i tried to ignore it for a month but then it started smelling like burnt electronics and eventually just died in the middle of a rainstorm. not fun.
i bought a replacement from mahle because they usually last longer than the cheap unbranded ones from certain sites. the swap itself wasnt too bad on that car but you really have to be a contortionist to reach the bolts way up in the footwell. i spent about two hours upside down with a headlamp. once i got the old one out you could see the commutator was completely black. put the new one in and it was like a hurricane in the cabin again. honestly if you have basic tools like a socket set and some torx bits you can do it in an afternoon. just make sure to disconnect the battery because you are working right near a lot of harness wires and you dont want to short anything out. ✌️

lol the "hitting the dash" trick works until it doesnt. i did that for way too long on my van.

what car is it? some cars like the xc90 are a nightmare because you have to take out the whole glovebox and even then the space is tiny. others like the older bmw models you can get to them from the engine bay side near the firewall. makes a huge difference in how much swearing is involved 🔧

if you find water in the motor housing when you take it out then your cowl drains are blocked. happened to me and it fried the motor. if you dont clear the drains the new motor will just die again in the next big storm.

i always go with vdo or hella for hvac stuff. the cheap ones are sometimes out of balance and you get this annoying vibration through the steering wheel when the fan is on high.

so i literally just finished doing this on my wifes car. i was going to pay a shop but they wanted like 400 for the part and labor which is insane. i got a tyc motor and a new resistor just in case. turns out the connector was actually melted too.
pro tip for everyone here... if your motor stops working dont just replace the motor. look at the harness plug. if it looks brown or melted you need to pigtail a new connector on there or the resistance will just keep building up heat and kill your brand new motor in a week. i used some dielectric grease on the new pins to keep the moisture out since the humidity gets bad here. took me about 90 minutes start to finish and most of that was just trying to find where i dropped one of the mounting screws in the carpet. works perfect now though and saved me a ton of cash. 👍

dropping the screws is the worst part of any interior job. i usually put a magnetic tray on the floor mat now.

just do it yourself man. even a mid-range motor like ridex or febi will be fine if you are on a budget. just watch a video for your specific model first so you know if there are any hidden clips. good luck!
