Hey everyone,

I’m considering buying a used 1998 Land Rover Defender. What are the pros and cons of this vintage model? Any specific issues I should watch out for, like rust, parts availability, or engine reliability?

Thanks for your insights!

Buying a used 1998 Land Rover Defender is choosing an iconic SUV, but with its own peculiarities.
    Pros
    - Legendary cross-country ability: Excellent SUV with a frame design.
    - Ease of repair: Many components are simple, you can repair them yourself.
    - Availability of spare parts: A wide selection of original and non-original parts.
    - Liquidity: Good examples are growing in price.
    Cons
    - Low comfort: Noise, poor ergonomics.
    - Weak dynamics: Slow on asphalt.
    - Reliability: Minor breakdowns are possible, requires constant attention.
What to pay attention to when buying:
    - Rust: The main problem. Carefully inspect the frame, rear of the chassis and body mounting points.
    - Engine (300Tdi): Check the cooling system, turbine and oil leaks.
    - Transmission: Evaluate the operation of the gearbox (R380) and transfer case (LT230), check the seals.
    - Chassis: Inspect the driveshafts and steering for play.
Defender is a car for enthusiasts. It requires attention and investment. A thorough diagnosis before purchase is required.
