Land Rover Discovery 4 - Reliability & Running Costs? LAND ROVER Discovery IV (L319) (09.2009 - 12.2018)
@Graziana Venturi14.01.2025 13:42AUTODOC expertThe Land Rover Discovery 4 is a capable and prestigious vehicle, but it has its quirks and higher maintenance costs.
Pros:
- Reliable 3.0L diesel engines.
- Durable all-wheel drive system.
Common Issues:
- Air suspension: Potential compressor or valve problems.
- Turbochargers: Wear on 3.0L diesel twin-turbos.
- Electronics: Complex systems may require repairs.
- Undercarriage wear: Due to weight and usage.
Considerations:
- Older vehicles and high mileage increase repair needs.
- Maintenance and parts are costly; review service history carefully.
Inspect the car thoroughly, assess your budget, and ensure you're ready for higher upkeep costs. With proper care, it can be a reliable companion.- @L.💂💂💂10.07.2025 16:15MemberThe Land Rover Discovery 4 is a capable and luxurious SUV, but as a daily driver, it comes with notable reliability and maintenance considerations that you should weigh carefully.
Common Reliability Issues
- Air Suspension: One of the most frequent and costly problems is with the air suspension system, which can develop leaks or compressor failures over time. This leads to uneven ride height and expensive repairs.
- Electrical and Software Glitches: The Discovery 4 has complex electronics, and owners often report sensor failures (especially related to air suspension and air conditioning), faulty warning lights, infotainment bugs, and issues with the electronic parking brake. Many of these require dealer-level diagnostics and software updates.
- Engine Concerns: While the engine itself is generally robust, some models (especially earlier ones) have had issues like cracked intake manifolds, exhaust gas recirculation system problems, and, in rare cases, serious engine failures like crankshaft issues. Regular maintenance and checks are essential.
- Recalls: The model has had multiple recalls affecting stability control software, airbags, engine wiring harnesses, and wheel nuts, so make sure any used vehicle you consider has had all recall work completed.
- Brake Wear: Due to the vehicle’s size and weight, brake components wear faster and need regular attention.
Maintenance Costs and Ownership Experience
- Maintenance and repairs tend to be expensive compared to mainstream SUVs, partly due to the complexity of systems and the need for specialist knowledge. Parts and labour can add up quickly.
- Owners often recommend finding a specialist Land Rover or 4x4 garage rather than relying solely on dealerships, as specialists may offer better expertise and pricing.
- The Discovery 4 is known to be a target for theft, so investing in additional security like trackers and immobilisers is advisable. - @L.💂💂💂10.07.2025 16:15Member- Owners often recommend finding a specialist Land Rover or 4x4 garage rather than relying solely on dealerships, as specialists may offer better expertise and pricing.

- Some owners report frustration with dealer service, citing long repair times, delays in parts availability, and inconsistent communication.
Is It Worth It as a Daily Driver?
- If you want a robust, off-road capable, and spacious SUV with premium features, the Discovery 4 delivers on those fronts.
- However, you should be prepared for higher running costs, potential unexpected repairs, and the need for diligent maintenance. It’s not a “buy and forget” vehicle like some more mainstream SUVs.
- Many owners say it’s fun and rewarding to own but caution that you should budget for maintenance and repairs accordingly to avoid being “bankrupted.”
- A thorough pre-purchase inspection with an OBD scanner is essential to identify fault codes and hidden issues before buying.
The Land Rover Discovery 4 offers luxury, space, and off-road prowess, but it comes with a mixed reliability record and potentially high maintenance costs. If you love the vehicle and can afford the upkeep, it can be a rewarding daily driver. If low running costs and reliability are your priority, you might want to consider alternatives.
If you decide to proceed, ensure you:
- Buy from a trusted source with full service history
- Get a detailed inspection by a specialist
- Confirm all recalls and software updates are done
- Budget for ongoing maintenance and potential repairs
This will help you enjoy the Discovery 4’s strengths while managing its known weaknesses. - @user_392164818.09.2025 12:32MemberYes, Disco 4 is good to go. But air suspensions and electronic handbrake are two gremlins you may face at some point. Otherwise engines are solid just crankshaft issue is something you may worry in background.
My suggestion is to buy one with solid service history and do not rush, get properly checked by a specialist. Sometimes, used models have rebuild engines or the original ones are not in the conditions to run for the good mileage and they start showing you issues very soon.
In that case I have a tip for you. Consider purchasing a second hand Disco 4 in a comparatively cheaper price, find supplier of re used/ rebuilt engine like Engine Finders (enginefinders.co.uk) or other supplier like this but the reliable one and get replaced with the best engine. It will not cost you much.

I’m seriously considering a Land Rover Discovery 4 as my daily driver, but I’m a bit worried about the potential reliability and maintenance costs. I’d really appreciate hearing from owners about their experiences – any major issues I should know about? Is it going to bankrupt me keeping it on the road?
