Hi
Can anyone tell me if they have had problems with a BMW X1 gearbox? I have a BMW X1, 67 Plate at 26600 miles. I only had it 1 year and then 5th gear stopped working and doesnt allow you to put it in 5th. Has anyone else had this problem with BMW’S or have a solution? BMW Aberdeen aren’t very helpful and said because it is out of warranty i would have to pay for a new gearbox without even looking at it.
@Grer195530.08.2022 14:08MemberOnce I had a BMW X1 and I also encountered automatic transmission repairs.Troubleshooting showed that the clutches of packages C, D, E were worn out. Also, the planetary gear was scattered in the trash. The box has been overhauled.Replaced planetary gear, clutch kit, gasket kit, and filter. They opened the torque converter - changed the friction disc, seals, rubber bands, and bearings.Washed and restored hydro block — changed the separator plate and dampers. After that I sold it.Spare parts for your BMWWorking on a BMW? Find parts and accessories suitable for your vehicle in the AUTODOC shop:

Several owners of BMW models, including the X1, have experienced problems where 5th gear stops functioning or won't engage, often linked to transmission faults.
Common reported causes center around:
- Faulty or worn components in the transmission, such as the selector hub or clutch packs (specifically clutch packages C, D, E).
- Valve body issues or problems with the mechatronics unit, which controls gear selection hydraulically and electronically.
- Sensor or software glitches, though hardware wear seems a frequent root cause.
One detailed case involving a BMW X1 at relatively low mileage (your issue is identical in mileage and symptom) described:
- Worn clutch packs and damaged planetary gears.
- Complete overhaul was needed — replacement of planetary gears, clutch kits, gasket kits, torque converter components, and a cleaning/restoration of the valve body/hydro block.
- This extensive repair is costly but was the resolution.
Another possibility is a defective selector hub, which BMW reportedly does not spare parts for, meaning a full replacement may be necessary.
Owners also report that some dealerships may be reluctant to diagnose thoroughly or offer repairs out of warranty and may push for full gearbox replacement.
Given this, your BMW Aberdeen dealership asking you to pay for a new gearbox without even looking might be premature. A proper diagnosis should include inspecting the mechatronics, clutch packs, and internal gears.
If you want a less costly route, some owners have successfully sourced used or refurbished mechatronics units or gearboxes and performed repairs at independent specialists. - @connor.m06.08.2025 10:18MemberSummary advice for you:
- Seek a second, independent specialist opinion if possible, preferably one experienced with BMW transmissions.
- Ask specifically for a diagnosis of the mechatronics unit, clutch packs, and selector hub.
- Keep documentation of your issues and dealer interactions, as sometimes persistence can help with goodwill repairs.
- Repair options range from mechatronics repair/replacement to full transmission overhaul or replacement.
This issue appears a known weak spot on BMW’s dual-clutch and automatic transmissions in several models, including the X1, especially at low mileage/time in some cases.
