Freelander 2 unidentified issue LAND ROVER Freelander 2 Van (L359) (... - ...)

Hello everyone,

I’d really appreciate some advice on a strange problem with my Land Rover.

The situation:

While driving, the car suddenly stopped and would not start again.

Following advice from some Land Rover colleagues, we managed to restart it by:

Adding 30L of diesel to the tank.

Spraying diesel over the injectors (they were completely dry).

They suspected that the two fuel tanks were not communicating.

I’ve since checked, and the tanks do communicate properly.

Another possibility is that the fuel gauge/float is not showing the correct level, and I actually ran out of diesel even though the display showed a range of 142 km remaining.

Important background:

The same issue happened once before, in 2023. The car stopped while driving, but after 3 days it started again with no intervention.

The common factor in both events: I had a horse trailer attached (empty at the time).

The trailer has LED lights fitted. Could this be related? Could it be something linked to the car’s electrical socket?

After the 2023 incident, I had the car checked several times in different service centres, and no relevant errors were found. Since then, I’ve driven it a lot, including many times with the trailer (both loaded and empty), without any issues.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Could this be a fuel gauge/electrical problem, or something related to towing electrics?

Thanks in advance for any ideas or guidance!

My old Land Rover sometimes randomly cut out while towing too. It turned out to be a mix of a dodgy fuel level sensor and some electrical interference from the trailer wiring. Eventually, the constant stalling messed up the engine enough that I had to get it replaced. My good luck, I found a cheap replacement through Engine Finders. I think it would be worth checking your fuel sensor and grounding points.
