I’m really struggling to fit my 2005 Ford Explorer alongside my partner’s hatchback in our double garage. The Explorer’s width and the garage’s narrow entryway make it tough. Any tips on optimizing space or parking techniques?

The 2005 Ford Explorer is about 72.1 inches (1,871 mm) wide without mirrors and approximately 189.5 inches (4,815 mm) long. Given this substantial width and length, fitting it alongside a hatchback in a double garage with a narrow entryway can be challenging.

Tips to Optimize Space and Parking Techniques
    - Measure Your Garage Entry and Interior Width:
Confirm the exact width of your garage door and interior space. A standard double garage door is often around 7 to 8 feet wide (84-96 inches), which can be tight for a 72-inch wide SUV plus another vehicle.
    - Fold or Remove Mirrors if Possible:
Folding in the Explorer’s side mirrors reduces width and can make maneuvering easier.
    - Angle Parking Technique:
Instead of parking straight in, try angling the Explorer slightly as you enter, then straighten it once inside to maximize clearance on both sides.
    - Use Parking Aids:
Install parking sensors, laser guides, or floor markers to help position the Explorer precisely without scraping walls or the other car.
    - Park the Smaller Car First:
If possible, park the hatchback in first, then carefully maneuver the Explorer in. This can help maximize space by adjusting the position of the smaller vehicle.
    - Consider Garage Modifications:
If space is very tight, consider widening the garage door opening or using slim-profile storage solutions to free up space on the sides.
    - Remove Unnecessary Items:
Clear clutter or storage near the garage walls to gain extra inches for door opening and movement.
    - Use a Car Cover or Door Protectors:
To protect both vehicles from accidental door dings in tight quarters.

Your 2005 Ford Explorer’s width of about 72 inches plus the hatchback’s width requires careful parking in a narrow double garage. Folding mirrors, angling the vehicle on entry, using parking aids, and organizing the garage space can help optimize fit and reduce stress when parking both cars side by side.
