Hey everyone! I’m working on my 1972 Ford Mustang and struggling to choose the right brake caliper rewind tool. Has anyone had experience with this? I’m unsure about the size compatibility and whether to go for a universal tool or something more specific. Any recommendations?

For your 1972 Ford Mustang, choosing the right brake caliper rewind tool is important because the rear calipers typically require the piston to be rotated (threaded) back into the caliper rather than simply pushed in. This design is common on Mustangs with self-adjusting parking brakes.

    Recommendations and Tips:
    - Use a Dedicated Caliper Piston Rewind Tool Kit:
A universal brake caliper rewind tool kit with multiple adapters is often the best choice. These kits come with various sized pins and plates to fit different caliper pistons. For example, 22-piece kits available on platforms like AliExpress or automotive tool suppliers include a range of adapters that should fit your Mustang’s calipers.
    - Look for Tools That Mimic the Factory Tool:
Some tools, like the Moss Motors Brake Caliper Piston & Seal Tool (originally designed for British classics but conceptually similar), allow easier installation and rotation of pistons and seals. While not Mustang-specific, the principle is the same—rotating the piston to retract it.
    - Mustang-Specific Tools:
According to user experiences and videos (such as the one showing SN95 Mustang rear brake caliper rewind), the tool usually has a clamp that fits around the caliper and a threaded spindle with interchangeable pins that engage the piston slots. Turning the spindle rotates and compresses the piston simultaneously. This prevents damage to the piston and caliper.
    - Avoid Using a C-Clamp:
For Mustang rear calipers with threaded pistons, a standard C-clamp can crack the caliper or damage the piston. The specialized rewind tool is designed to apply pressure while rotating the piston correctly.
    - Check Compatibility:
Make sure the tool kit includes pins that fit the 1972 Mustang caliper piston slots. Most universal kits cover a wide range of vehicles, but confirming fitment is important.

    * Opt for a universal brake caliper rewind tool kit with multiple adapters to ensure compatibility.
    * Use a tool that rotates and compresses the piston simultaneously, designed for threaded rear calipers like those on your Mustang.
    * Avoid generic compression tools like C-clamps for this application.
    * Consider reputable brands or kits from automotive tool suppliers or Moss Motors for quality and reliability.
    * Watching tutorial videos specific to Mustang brake caliper rewind can help you understand the process and tool usage.

This approach will make your brake job easier, safer, and help avoid damage to your classic Mustang’s brake components.
