Replace brake shoes as a set on an axle. This will ensure efficient braking.
The replacement procedure is identical for brake shoes on the same axle.
Please note: all work on the car – SKODA ROOMSTER Praktik (5J) – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3
Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. SKODA ROOMSTER Praktik (5J)
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean the brake drum fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7
Unscrew the brake drum fastening. Use Torx T30. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 8
Remove the brake drum.
Step 9
Pull both brake shoes with the adjuster from the working brake cylinder, avoiding damage to the boots. Use pliers.
Step 10
Take out brake pad retainer springs from the holes. Use pliers.
Step 11
Remove the lower return spring of brake shoes. Use pliers.
Step 12
Remove both shoes from the mounting bracket. Use pliers.
Replacement: brake shoes – SKODA ROOMSTER Praktik (5J). Tip from AUTODOC:
Don't press the brake pedal after removing the rear brake drum shoes. This will cause the piston to fall out of the brake cylinder, leakage of brake fluid and depressurization of the system.
Step 13
Disconnect the parking brake cable.
Step 14
Perform further demounting of the upper retaining spring and the adjuster mechanism. Use pliers.
Step 15
Clean the fasteners of the brake shoes. Use a wire brush.
Step 16
Install the upper retaining springs and adjustment mechanism on new brake shoes. Use pliers. Use round-nose pliers.
Step 17
Clean the mounting seats of the brake shoes. Use a wire brush.
Step 18
Treat the mounting seats of the brake shoes. Use copper grease.
Step 19
Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever. Use round-nose pliers.
Step 20
Install the brake shoes on the working brake cylinder on the bracket and on the brake-support plate bracket.
Step 21
Install the lower return spring. Use pliers.
Step 22
Insert retaining springs into pin slots. Use pliers.
Step 23
Clean the hub. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 24
Install a brake drum.
Step 25
Tigten the brake drum fasteners. Use Torx T30. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 4 Nm torque.
Step 26
Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush.
Step 27
Treat the surface where the wheel rim contacts the brake drum. Use high-temperature ceramic grease.
Step 28
Install the wheel.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. SKODA ROOMSTER Praktik (5J)
Step 29
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 30
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Slow down gently for the first 150–200 km after replacing the brake shoes. Avoid excessive and abrupt braking during that time.Adjust the gap between the brake shoes and the drum on SKODA ROOMSTER Praktik (5J), pressing the brake pedal 10-15 times.
