HI, I have had a noise from my Ignis 2003, it sounds like a really load squealing, similar to a belt slipping. It happens more often in the cold, and I had a alternator belt snap after just 1 year of use. However we have tightened the bolts and pulleys, the whole lot has been tightened. Mu clutch squeaks and I can make the noise stop by pushing hard braking while moving slowly, In people’s opinion is this still an alternator issue, should I replace it and the pulleys etc. Or take it to a shop to have the clutch and breaks checked. The car has only done 53000 miles and I’d like to keep it running.

The description sounds like you need to replace the drive belt, I would still recommend that you go to your mechanic and have him check it out more accurately.

The loud squealing noise from your 2003 Suzuki Ignis that sounds like a slipping belt, especially in cold conditions, is very likely caused by the alternator belt slipping on the pulleys. Since your alternator belt snapped after just one year of use, this indicates that the belt or associated components might be worn or improperly tensioned.

Here are the main points to consider:

    - Even though you have tightened the bolts and pulleys, if the belt itself is old, glazed, cracked, or stretched, it will still slip and squeal.
    - Cold weather can stiffen the belt and reduce its grip, making slipping noises more frequent.
    - The tensioner or pulleys might be misaligned, worn, or have bad bearings, contributing to the noise.
    - Contamination on the belt or pulleys (like oil or coolant) can cause slipping.
    - Your clutch squeaking might be unrelated but could also be a sign of wear and should be checked.
    - The fact that pushing the brake stops the noise could be due to loading the drivetrain, reducing belt slip temporarily.

The recommendation is to replace the alternator belt if it's worn and simultaneously check or replace the belt tensioner and pulleys if needed. Also, it's a good idea to have a mechanic inspect your clutch and brakes to rule out related issues.

In summary, yes, the noise is very likely an alternator belt issue combined possibly with worn tensioning components. Replacing the belt and inspecting pulleys/tensioners is advisable, along with checking the clutch and brakes at a shop to keep your Ignis running reliably.
