I had my golf 1.5 tsi 130 hp remapped to about 170 hp. The performance/sports gauge still only shows max 130 hp (96kw) when accelerating. Why is that?

had the same thing happen with my 2019 golf variant after a stage 1 tune. the dash display is basically just a calculated value based on the factory map software and doesnt actually measure real-time output from a sensor or anything like that. the ecu has a lookup table for torque and power and since your tuner probably didnt touch the display calibration data it just hits the old ceiling and stops there. i used a bosch diagnostic tool to check actual rail pressure and boost later and the gains were definitely there even if the screen was lying to me 😅

exactly what happened to me. the digital cockpit gauges are programmed with hard limits in the firmware. if the factory says 96kw then the gauge is literally "drawn" to only go that high. even if the engine is pushing 180hp the needle or bar just stops at the max pixel point because it doesn't know there is a "new" max. you need a tuner who knows how to rescale those specific sport displays in the mib unit otherwise it stays a static gimmick from the factory setup.

i wouldnt worry about the screen too much as long as the car feels faster. i switched to shell v-power and noticed the pull is much stronger on my tsi. @archie_b is right though it is just software calculation based on injected fuel mass and air intake from the bosch sensors but it only references the original scaling.

its not just the scaling though. many tuners leave the torque limiters in the gateway or the display module untouched because it is extra work. my leon had the same 1.5 tsi engine and after the remap i actually had to go back and ask them to fix the sport monitor specifically. they had to access the 5f information electronics module to change the end values of the gauges. took them ten minutes but most generic flash tunes won't include that.

honestly most of those gauges are toys anyway. if you really want to see the 170hp get a p3 gauge or use an obd11 to log the actual torque values while driving. @Thomas99 is it even worth the hassle of going back to the shop just for a screen? i just look at the road lol ✌️

i get why he wants it fixed though if you pay for a tune you want the car to reflect it. when i did the suspension with bilstein parts i wanted everything perfect too. @user_970979 did you notice any change in fuel consumption? i heard the 1.5 is sensitive to mapping.

i have the 130hp version as well and i am thinking about a remap but this screen issue sounds annoying. i already changed my oil to castrol edge to prepare for the extra heat. if the gauge stays at 130hp does it at least move faster to that point or does the whole animation feel laggy now?

the animation is fine but it just hits the wall at 96kw like a brick. i have seen some threads where people used vcds to try and change the scaling themselves but it is tricky depending on which software version your infotainment is running. i tried it on my passat with a varta battery charger connected so i didnt drain it during coding but i couldnt find the specific adaptation channel for the max power value.

i have been running a mapped 1.5 tsi for two years now and had the same confusion at the start. basically the ecu calculates power based on a torque-to-power conversion table. when the engine is remapped the internal torque values are higher but the "display torque" is often capped at the factory maximum so it doesn't trigger errors in other modules like the dsg or traction control. if your tuner "fooled" the ecu by changing the duration of injection without updating the torque maps then the car thinks it is still making stock power even though it is moving way faster. i had to use a mann-filter kit and fresh spark plugs before my tuner would even touch those deeper maps to make sure everything was safe. if you really want the gauge to move you need a custom file that specifically addresses the mib2 or mib3 sport display scaling otherwise it is a lost cause. most "off the shelf" maps from big brands like apr or revo usually fix this but smaller local tuners often forget this part. check if your boost is hitting about 1.3 or 1.4 bar then you know the 170hp is actually there.

thats a lot of technical stuff lol. i just know that my golf felt way better after i put on some michelin pilot sports even without a tune.

just enjoy the sleeper vibe. if the gauge says 130 and you are gapping people who think you are stock then that is a win in my book. my experience with the vw software is that it is a nightmare to get every single module to agree with a remap especially with the newer locked sfd stuff on the mk8 models.

haha true but it would trigger my ocd so bad. @user_970979 did your tuner mention anything about the gauges when you picked it up? usually they give a disclaimer about the sport displays if they know they cant change them.

i had a similar issue with my osram led upgrade where the car kept thinking the old bulbs were there until i coded it. the vag software is very specific about these things. if the tuner didnt adjust the specific dataset for the cockpit it will never show the true 170hp. simple as that really. check your dyno sheet if you got one that is the only number that matters anyway 👍

true but the dyno sheet stays in the glovebox and the screen is right there in your face every day. i might hold off on my tune until i find someone who can definitely fix the display too. 🔧
