How to change front wheel bearing AUDI A4 B5 TUTORIAL | AUTODOC
All the parts you need to replace – Wheel Bearing for A4 Avant (8D5, B5) and other AUDI models
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7
Unscrew the caliper bracket fastening. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 8
Remove the fastening bolts (2 pieces).
Step 9
Remove the brake caliper together with its bracket.
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A4 B5 Avant. Professionals recommend:
Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur. Check the brake caliper bracket, brake caliper guide pins and boots. Clean them. Replace, if necessary.

Remove the brake disc.
Step 11
Clean the wheel hub fastener. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 12
Unscrew the wheel hub axle nut. Use a drive socket #24. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 13
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 14
Clean the fastener that connects the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 15
Unscrew the ball joint fastening to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #18.
Step 16
Disconnect the lower arm from the steering knuckle. Use a crowbar. Use a rubber mallet.
Step 17
Clean the fastener connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 18.1
Unscrew the end fastening nut to the steering knuckle.
Step 18.2
Use a drive socket #13. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 19
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 20
Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Use a flat metal-working chisel. Use a hammer.
Step 21
Unscrew the upper arm fastenings. Use a combination spanner #17. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 22
Remove the fastening bolt. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.
Step 23
Remove the control arms. Use a flat metal-working chisel. Use a hammer.
Step 24
Remove the fastening nut.
Step 25
Remove the steering knuckle together with the hub.
Step 26
Remove the wheel hub from the steering knuckle. Use a bush and bearing driver set. Use a hammer.
Step 27
Press out the wheel hub bearing. Use a bush and bearing driver set. Use a hammer.
Step 28
Clean the hub bearing mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 29
Press the new bearing in the steering knuckle. Use a bush and bearing driver set. Use a hammer.
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A4 B5 Avant. Tip from AUTODOC:
Check to make sure the wheel hub bearing is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment. Stop pressing on the surface of the bearing immediately after it has been fitted into its mounting seat.
Step 30
Install the wheel hub on the steering knuckle. Use a bush and bearing driver set.
Step 31
Install the steering knuckle with a hub in assembly.
Step 32
Install the fastening nut.
Step 33
Install the control arms Use a rubber mallet.
Step 34
Install the fastening bolt. Use a hammer. Use a pin punch.
Step 35
Tighten the upper arm fastenings. Use a combination spanner #17. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 40 Nm torque.
Step 36
Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a rubber mallet.
Step 37
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 38
Tighten the fastening nut connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 7 nm torque.
Step 39
Tighten the fastening nut connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 50 nm torque.
Step 40
Connect the lower control arm to the steering knuckle.
Step 41
Tighten the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #18. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 100 Nm torque.
Step 42
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 43
Tighten the hub. Use a drive socket #24. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 115 Nm torque.+180°
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 44
Clean the hub. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 45
Install the brake disc.
Step 46
Treat the fastening bolts. Use a sealant.
Step 47
Clean the mounting seats of the caliper and its bracket. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 48
Install the brake caliper together with its bracket.
Step 49
Install the fastening bolts (2 pieces).
Step 50
Tighten the brake caliper bracket. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 125 Nm torque.
Step 51
Treat the fastener connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Treat the fasteners of the ball joint. Treat the fasteners connecting the control arm to the steering knuckle. Use copper grease.
Step 52
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 53
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A4 B5 Avant. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 54
Install the wheel.
Replacement: wheel bearing – Audi A4 B5 Avant. Tip:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 55
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 56
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 nm torque.
Step 57
Remove the jacks and chocks.
