How to change a Rear wheel bearing on VOLVO XC90 1 TUTORIAL | AUTODOC
All the parts you need to replace – Wheel Bearing for XC90 I (275) and other VOLVO models
Do not re-use the bearing assembly of your Volvo XC90 1 car.
The wheel hub bearing replacement procedure is identical for both wheels on the same axle.
Please note: all work on the car – Volvo XC90 1 – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 3
Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Volvo XC90 1
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7
Unscrew the caliper bracket fastening. Use a combination spanner #13.
Step 8
Remove the brake caliper together with its bracket.
Replacement: wheel bearing – Volvo XC90 1. Tip from AUTODOC:
Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur.Check the brake caliper bracket, brake caliper guide pins and boots. Clean them. Replace, if necessary.
Step 9
Clean the brake disc fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 10
Unscrew the brake disc fastening. Use a combination spanner #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 11
Remove the brake disc.
Step 12
Unscrew the fastener connecting the drive shaft to the wheel hub. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 13
Remove the drive shaft. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.
Step 14
Clean the control arm fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 15
Unscrew the fastener connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle. Use a combination spanner #18. Use a drive socket #15. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 16
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 17
Detach the control arm.
Step 18
Unscrew the wheel hub axle nut. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench. Use a tap wrench.
Step 19
Remove the hub and the bearing together, since they are a sealed unit. Use a rubber mallet.
Step 20
Clean the hub bearing mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 21
Install the new wheel hub with a bearing.
Step 22
Mount the drive shaft into the
wheel hub.
Step 23
Tighten the hub. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 45 Nm torque.+60°
The wheel bearing unit must not tilt on the axle pin.Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 24
Treat the fasteners of the wheel hub bearing. Use copper grease.
Step 25
Attach the control arm. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 26
Install the fastening bolt. Use a crowbar. Use a hammer.
Step 27
Screw in the fasteners connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle.
Step 28
Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 29
Tighten the fasteners connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle. Use a combination spanner #18. Use a drive socket #15. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 80 Nm torque.
Step 30
Remove the support from under the steering knuckle.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: wheel bearing – Volvo XC90 1. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 31
Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 32
Install the brake disc.
Step 33
Tighten the brake disc fastening. Use a combination spanner #10. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 11 Nm torque.
Step 34
Tighten the bolt connecting the drive shaft to the wheel hub. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 50 Nm torque.
Step 35
Install the brake caliper together with its bracket.
Step 36
Tighten the brake caliper bracket. Use a combination spanner #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 35 Nm torque.+60°
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 37
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 38
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: wheel bearing – Volvo XC90 1. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 39
Install the wheel.

Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Volvo XC90 1
Step 40
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 41
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 140 nm torque.
Step 42
Remove the jacks and chocks.
