Replacement: wheel bearing – VW Passat B5 Variant. AUTODOC recommends:

Do not re-use the bearing assembly of your VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT B5 car.
The wheel hub bearing replacement procedure is identical for both wheels on the same axle.
Please note: all work on the car – VW Passat B5 Variant – should be done with the engine switched off.

Carry out replacement in the following order:

Step 1

Secure the wheels with chocks.

Step 2

Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3

Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.

Step 4

Unscrew the wheel bolts.

Replacement: wheel bearing – VW Passat B5 Variant. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
Step 5

Remove the wheel.
Step 6

Unscrew the wheel hub axle nut. Use a drive socket #27.
Step 7

Spread the brake pads. Use a flat screwdriver.

Step 8

Unscrew the caliper bracket fastening. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench. Use a tap wrench.
Step 9

Disconnect the ABS sensor electric socket. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 10

Disconnect the brake pad wear sensor plug. Use a flat screwdriver.

Please note!
Some cars are not equipped with the brake pad wear sensor.
Step 11

Remove the brake caliper together with its bracket.

Replacement: wheel bearing – VW Passat B5 Variant. Professionals recommend:
Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur. Check the brake caliper bracket, brake caliper guide pins and boots. Clean them. Replace, if necessary.
Step 12

Remove the brake disc. Use a rubber mallet.
Step 13.1

Disconnect the ABS sensor wiring.

Step 13.2

Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 14

Clean the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.

Step 15

Unscrew the ball joint fastening to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #18.
Step 16

Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Use a ball joint puller. Use a hammer.
Step 17

Unscrew the ball joint fastening to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 18

Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Use a crowbar. Use a hammer.
Step 19

Clean the fastener connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.

Step 20

Unscrew the end fastening nut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 21

Unscrew the end fastening nut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.

Step 22

Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Use a flat screwdriver. Use a hammer.
Step 23

Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.

Step 24

Unscrew the upper arm fastenings. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 25

Remove the fastening bolt. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.

Step 26

Release the fastener that connects the control arm ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a flat screwdriver. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.

Step 27

Detach the upper control arm from the steering knuckle.

Step 28

Remove the steering knuckle together with the hub.
Step 29

Press the wheel hub out from the tapered roller bearing. Use a bush and bearing driver set. Use a hammer.
Step 30

Press out the wheel hub bearing. Use a bush and bearing driver set.

Replacement: wheel bearing – VW Passat B5 Variant. AUTODOC recommends:
Apply special grease to the bearing assembly mounting seat.
Step 31

Press the new bearing in the steering knuckle. Use a bush and bearing driver set.

Replacement: wheel bearing – VW Passat B5 Variant. AUTODOC experts recommend:
Check to make sure the wheel hub bearing is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment. Stop pressing on the surface of the bearing immediately after it has been fitted into its mounting seat.
Step 32

Press the wheel hub into the bearing inner race. Use a bush and bearing driver set.
Step 33

Install the steering knuckle with a hub in assembly.
Step 34

Clean the ball joint mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.

Step 35

Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle.
Step 36

Tighten the ball joint fastener. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 100 Nm torque.
Step 37

Install the fastening bolt. Use a hammer.

Step 38

Attach the upper control arm to the steering knuckle. Use a flat screwdriver.

Step 39

Tighten the upper arm fastenings. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 40 Nm torque.
Step 40

Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a hammer.
Step 41

Tighten the fastening nut connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 7 nm torque.

Step 42

Tighten the fastening nut connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 45 nm torque.

Step 43

Tighten the hub. Use a drive socket #27. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 115 Nm torque.+180°

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 44

Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle.

Step 45

Tighten the ball joint fastener. Use a combination spanner #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 100 Nm torque.

Step 46

Secure the wiring in the wheel arch with clips. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 47

Install the brake disc.
Step 48

Install the brake caliper together with its bracket.

Step 49

Tighten the brake caliper bracket. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Step 50

Connect the ABS sensor cable fastener.
Step 51

Connect the brake pads wear sensor.
Step 52

Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.

Step 53

Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: wheel bearing – VW Passat B5 Variant. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 54

Install the wheel.

Replacement: wheel bearing – VW Passat B5 Variant. Tip from AUTODOC:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 55

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.

Step 56

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.

Step 57

Remove the jacks and chocks.
