How to change front shock absorber on VW TRANSPORTER 4 (T4) [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]

All the parts you need to replace – Shock Absorber for Transporter IV Minibus (70B, 70C, 7DB, 7DK, 70J, 70K, 7DC, 7DJ) and other VW models

Wheel chock
Replacement: shock absorbers – VW Transporter T4. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
- Replace both front shock absorbers at a time.
- The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right shock absorbers of the front suspension.
- Please note: all work on the car – VW Transporter T4 – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
- Step 1Secure the wheels with chocks.
- Step 2Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
- Step 3Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
- Step 4Unscrew the wheel bolts.Replacement: shock absorbers – VW Transporter T4. AUTODOC recommends:To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
- Step 5Remove the wheel.
- Step 6Clean the shock absorber fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 7Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
- Step 8Unscrew the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a drive socket #21. Use a ratchet wrench. Use a tap wrench.Replacement: shock absorbers – VW Transporter T4. Tip:If necessary, remove the rubber bush of the shock absorber.
- Step 9Unscrew the upper fastener of the shock absorber. Use a drive socket #18. Use a tap wrench.AUTODOC recommends:Important! Hold the shock absorber while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW Transporter T4
- Step 10Lower the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.AUTODOC recommends:Replacement: shock absorbers – VW Transporter T4. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
- Step 11Remove the shock absorber.
- Step 12Grip the shock absorber in a vice.
- Step 13Clean the shock absorber rod fastener. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 14Remove the shock absorber piston rod fastening. Use a combination spanner #17.
- Step 15Remove the shock absorber upper mount.
- Step 16Release the vice and take out the shock absorber.Step 17Before installing a new shock absorber you should pump it manually 3-5 times.
- Step 18Install the shock absorber upper mount.
- Step 19Clean the shock absorber rod. Use WD-40 spray.
