How to change front shock absorber on VW TRANSPORTER 4 (T4) [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]

Replacement: shock absorbers – VW Transporter T4. Tip from AUTODOC experts:

Replace both front shock absorbers at a time.
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right shock absorbers of the front suspension.
Please note: all work on the car – VW Transporter T4 – should be done with the engine switched off.

Carry out replacement in the following order:

Step 1

Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2

Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3

Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4

Unscrew the wheel bolts.

Replacement: shock absorbers – VW Transporter T4. AUTODOC recommends:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
Step 5

Remove the wheel.
Step 6

Clean the shock absorber fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7

Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 8

Unscrew the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a drive socket #21. Use a ratchet wrench. Use a tap wrench.

Replacement: shock absorbers – VW Transporter T4. Tip:
If necessary, remove the rubber bush of the shock absorber.
Step 9

Unscrew the upper fastener of the shock absorber. Use a drive socket #18. Use a tap wrench.

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the shock absorber while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW Transporter T4
Step 10

Lower the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: shock absorbers – VW Transporter T4. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 11

Remove the shock absorber.
Step 12

Grip the shock absorber in a vice.
Step 13

Clean the shock absorber rod fastener. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 14

Remove the shock absorber piston rod fastening. Use a combination spanner #17.
Step 15

Remove the shock absorber upper mount.
Step 16

Release the vice and take out the shock absorber.

Step 17

Before installing a new shock absorber you should pump it manually 3-5 times.
Step 18

Install the shock absorber upper mount.
Step 19

Clean the shock absorber rod. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 20

Screw the shock strut piston rod upper fastening. Use a combination spanner #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 25 Nm torque.

Replacement: shock absorbers – VW Transporter T4. Professionals recommend:
Check to make sure the spring is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment.
Step 21

Clean the shock absorber mounting seats. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 22

Place the shock absorber in the wheel arch and secure it.

AUTODOC recommends:
VW Transporter T4 – To avoid injury, hold the shock absorber while screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 23

Tighten the top shock absorber fastening. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 75 Nm torque.
Step 24

Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 25

Tighten the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a drive socket #21. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Step 26

Remove the support from under the arm.

Replacement: shock absorbers – VW Transporter T4. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Lower the hydraulic transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging assemblies and mechanisms.
Step 27

Treat the shock absorber fasteners. Use copper grease.
Step 28

Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 29

Install the wheel.

AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. VW Transporter T4
Step 30

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 31

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 170 Nm torque.
Step 32

Remove the jacks and chocks.
