The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right lower control arms.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: front lower arm – VW GOLF VI Variant (AJ5). Use the following procedure:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW GOLF VI Variant (AJ5)
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Treat all joints of the arm. Use WD-40 spray.
Replacement: front lower arm – VW GOLF VI Variant (AJ5). Tip:
After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.Wear protective goggles.
Step 7
Unscrew the fasteners of the ball joint. Use a drive socket #15. Use a tap wrench.
Step 8
Unscrew the rear fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a drive socket #15. Use a tap wrench.
Step 9
Unscrew the rear fastener connecting the control arm to the car body. Use a drive socket #18. Use a tap wrench.
Step 10
Unscrew the front arm fastener. Use a drive socket #15. Use a drive socket #18. Use a tap wrench.
Step 11
Remove the arm. Use a crowbar.
Step 12
Treat the fasteners of the ball joint. Use copper grease.
Step 13
Install a new arm.
Replacement: front lower arm – VW GOLF VI Variant (AJ5). Tip from AUTODOC experts:
During the installation process, use only new bolts and nuts.Do not damage the ball joint cover.
Step 14
Install the front fastener of the arm. Do not tighten it.
Step 15
Attach the ball joint to the control arm.
Step 16
Install the fasteners of the ball joint.
Step 17
Screw the fasteners of the ball joint. Use a drive socket #15. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 18
Screw the rear fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a drive socket #15. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 19
Screw the rear fastener connecting the control arm to the car body. Use a drive socket #15. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 20
Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 21
Screw the front arm fastener. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 70 Nm torque.+180°
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 22
Tighten the rear fastener connecting the arm to the car body. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 70 Nm torque.+90°
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 23
Tighten the rear fastener connecting the arm to the body subframe. Use a drive socket #15. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 50 Nm torque.+90°
Replacement: front lower arm – VW GOLF VI Variant (AJ5). Professionals recommend:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 24
Tighten the fasteners of the ball joint. Use a drive socket #15. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 60 nm torque.
Step 25
Remove the support from under the arm.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: front lower arm – VW GOLF VI Variant (AJ5). Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 26
Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 27
Install the wheel.
AUTODOC recommends:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 28
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 29
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 nm torque.
Step 30
Remove the jacks and chocks.
