All the parts you need to replace – Control Arm for V-Class (W638/2) and other MERCEDES-BENZ models
Replacement: front lower arm – MERCEDES-BENZ V-CLASS (638/2). AUTODOC recommends:
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right lower control arms.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: front lower arm – MERCEDES-BENZ V-CLASS (638/2). Use the following procedure:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. MERCEDES-BENZ V-CLASS (638/2)
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Treat all joints of the arm. Use WD-40 spray.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: front lower arm – MERCEDES-BENZ V-CLASS (638/2). After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.Wear protective goggles.
Step 7
Unscrew the ball joint fastening to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #21 (2 pieces).
Step 8
Unscrew and remove the wheel arch cover fasteners. Use a drive socket #8. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 9
Remove the wheel arch cover.
Step 10
Unscrew the front arm fastener. Use a combination spanner #18. Use a drive socket #19. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 11
Remove the fastening bolt. Use a crowbar.
Step 12
Unscrew the rear arm fastener. Use a combination spanner #21. Use a drive socket #19. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 13
Clean the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 14
Release the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a flat metal-working chisel. Use a hammer.
Step 15
Disconnect the spherical joint from the arm. Use a crowbar.
Step 16
Remove the arm. Use a crowbar.
Step 17
Clean the mounting seats and the thread of the suspension arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 18
Install a new arm.
Replacement: front lower arm – MERCEDES-BENZ V-CLASS (638/2). AUTODOC experts recommend:
During the installation process, use only new bolts and nuts.Do not damage the ball joint cover.
Step 19
Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle.
Step 20
Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 21
Take the flat chisel out of the steering knuckle.
Step 22
Install the fastening bolt. Do not tighten it.
Step 23
Screw the rear arm fastener. Use a drive socket #19. Use a combination spanner #21. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 24
Raise the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.
Step 25
Tighten the front fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a drive socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 155 nm torque.
Step 26
Tighten the rear fastener of the control arm. Use a drive socket #19. Use a combination spanner #21. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 90 nm torque.
Step 27
Tighten the ball joint fastener. Use a combination spanner #21. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 162 nm torque.
Step 28
Remove the support from under the arm.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: front lower arm – MERCEDES-BENZ V-CLASS (638/2). Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 29
Treat all joints of the arm. Use copper grease.
Step 30
Install the wheel arch cover to its mounting seat.
Step 31
Install and tighten the wheel arch cover fasteners. Use a drive socket #8. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 32
Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 33
Install the wheel.
Replacement: front lower arm – MERCEDES-BENZ V-CLASS (638/2). Tip from AUTODOC:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 34
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 35
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 175 nm torque.
Step 36
Remove the jacks and chocks.
