The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right shock absorbers of the front suspension.
Please note: all work on the car – Mercedes W210 – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Mercedes W210
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Install the coil spring compressor on the coil spring.
Replacement: coil springs – Mercedes W210. Tip:
Use adapters and jaws of the appropriate size. The sping coils should be securely fixed with the coil spring compressor. Use high quality coil spring compressors.
Step 7
Compress the spring by turning the lead screw of the coil spring compressor. Use a combination spanner. The wrench size may vary depending on the spring compressor manufacturer.
Replacement: coil springs – Mercedes W210. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Compress the coil spring compressor until there is enough room to remove the spring. Do not compress the tool to the full: the spring coils must not touch each other. Be careful. The compressed spring is powerful and in case of disrupting ties, straightening, it can cause injury.
Step 8
Clean the shock absorber fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 9
Unscrew the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a combination spanner #17. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 10
Detach the lower part of the shock absorber.
Step 11
Pull down the suspension control arm. Use a crowbar.
Step 12
Remove the coil spring together with the coil spring compressor. Use water pump pliers.
Pull down the suspension control arm. Use a crowbar.
Step 21
Install the coil spring together with the rubber mounts into the mounting seats. Use water pump pliers.
Step 22
Attach the lower part of the shock absorber. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 23
Release the coil spring by turning the lead screw of the coil spring compressor.
Step 24
Remove the coil spring compressor.
Step 25
Tighten the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a combination spanner #17. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 55 Nm torque.
Step 26
Treat the shock absorber fasteners. Use copper grease.
Step 27
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 28
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: coil springs – Mercedes W210. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 29
Install the wheel.

Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Mercedes W210
Step 30
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 31
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 110 nm torque.
Step 32
Remove the jacks and chocks.
