How to change front springs / front coil springs on FIAT DOBLO 1 (223) [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]

All the parts you need to replace – Springs for Doblo Cargo (223_) and other FIAT models

Coil spring

        Coil spring for Doblo I Cargo (223) Diesel (84 hp)
      
        Coil spring for Doblo I Cargo (223) Diesel (120 hp)
      
        Coil spring for Doblo I Cargo (223) Diesel (100 hp)
      
        Coil spring for Doblo I Cargo (223) Diesel (105 hp)
      
        Coil spring for Doblo I Cargo (223) Diesel (70 hp)

Replacement: coil springs – Fiat Doblo Cargo. Tools you might need:

                        Wire brush
                      
                        WD-40 spray
                      
                        Copper grease 
                      
                        Drive socket # 13 
                      
                        Drive socket # 19 
                      
                        HEX bit No.H6
                      
                        Combination spanner #19
                      
                        Wheel impact socket #17
                      
                        Ratchet wrench
                      
                        Torque wrench
                      
                        Pin punch
                      
                        Tap wrench
                      
                        Rubber mallet
                      
                        Crow bar
                      
                        Hydraulic strut spring compressor
                      
                        Hydraulic transmission jack
                      
                        Fender cover
                      
                        Wheel chock

Replacement: coil springs – Fiat Doblo Cargo. AUTODOC recommends:

Both coil springs of the front suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right coil springs of the front suspension.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.

Replacement: coil springs – Fiat Doblo Cargo. Recommended sequence of steps:

Step 1

Open the bonnet.
Step 2

Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
Step 3

Clean the fasteners of the shock strut upper mount. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 4

Loosen the upper fastener of the shock strut mount. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 5

Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 6

Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 7

Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 8

Unscrew the wheel bolts.

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Fiat Doblo Cargo
Step 9

Remove the wheel.
Step 10

Remove the brake hose.

Step 11

Clean the fasteners connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 12

Unscrew the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #19. Use a drive socket #19. Use a tap wrench.
Step 13

Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 14

Remove the fastening bolts.
Step 15

Disconnect the steering knuckle from the shock absorber strut. Use a pin punch. Use a rubber mallet.
Step 16

Unscrew the top fastening of the shock strut mount.

AUTODOC recommends:
Fiat Doblo Cargo – To avoid injury, hold the suspension strut while unscrewing the fastening bolts.
Step 17

Remove the suspension strut.
Step 18

Set the shock absorber strut on the spring compressor tool.

Replacement: coil springs – Fiat Doblo Cargo. Professionals recommend:
Note that when using a spring compressor, spring coils need to be securely gripped, compressing the spring on the opposite sides.Ensure the correct position of the spring in the retainer.Make sure that the spring coils tightly entered the lock handles.
Step 19

Compress the spring.
Step 20

Remove the shock strut mount cap.
Step 21

Clean the shock absorber rod. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 22

Remove the strut piston rod nut. Use a drive socket #19. Use HEX No.H6.
Step 23

Remove the top strut mount.
Step 24

Release the coil spring.
Step 25

Remove the spring.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: coil springs – Fiat Doblo Cargo. Carefully inspect the mount, the boot, and the bump stop of the shock absorber. Replace if necessary.
Step 26

Install the spring on the shock absorber.
Step 27

Compress the spring.
Step 28

Install the upper strut mount and the strut mount bearing.
Step 29

Tighten the shock strut piston rod nut. Use a drive socket #19. Use HEX No.H6. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 65 Nm torque.

Replacement: coil springs – Fiat Doblo Cargo. Tip:
Check to make sure the spring is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment.
Step 30

Decompress the spring.
Step 31

Remove the assembled shock strut.
Step 32

Install the shock strut into the wheel arch.
Step 33

Screw the top fastening of the shock strut mount. Do not tighten it.

Replacement: coil springs – Fiat Doblo Cargo. AUTODOC recommends:
To avoid injuries, hold the shock strut when screwing the fastening bolts in.
Step 34

Treat the shock strut mounting seat on the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush.

Step 35

Treat the steering knuckle fasteners. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 36

Fix the shock absorber strut on the steering knuckle. Use a crowbar.
Step 37

Install the fastening bolts.
Step 38

Remove the support from under the steering knuckle.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: coil springs – Fiat Doblo Cargo. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 39

Tighten the lower fasteners connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #19. Use a combination spanner #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Step 40

Treat the brake hose fasteners. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 41

Fasten the brake hose on the strut.
Step 42

Treat the shock strut fasteners. Use copper grease.
Step 43

Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 44

Install the wheel.

AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Fiat Doblo Cargo
Step 45

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 46

Tighten the upper fastener of the shock absorber strut mount. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 32 Nm torque.
Step 47

Treat the fasteners of the shock strut mount. Use copper grease.
Step 48

Install the shock strut mount cap.
Step 49

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 98 Nm torque.
Step 50

Remove the fender protection cover.
Step 51

Close the hood.
Step 52

Remove the jacks and chocks.
