VW ESP light always on – anyone know why?
VW Golf IV Hatchback (1J1)

Hello, I bought 2002 2.0 VW Golf IV Hatchback around 6 months ago and the ESP light is constantly on and won’t turn off. The traction control/anti-skid warning light is also constantly on the dash. Does anyone have any ideas why the ESP light on my VW is always on?!

This problem is extremely common. You have to have diagnostics performed on the ABS system. Most likely this will find the fault code 01435 Brake Pressure Sensor 1 (201) or similar. This means the brake pressure sensor inside the ABS pump is defective and that the electrical part of the pump needs to be replaced. VW has a repair kit for this. You could go to your VW dealer and see if they’ll cover any of the repairs. If you point out how common this problem is they might replace it for you for free. It’s worth a try.
