Volkswagen multifunction display – how to customise
VW SAFARI

I’m trying to customize my Volkswagen’s multifunction display. I mean the instrument cluster MFD, not the satnav MFD. It seems like certain menu options come up when you plug in OEM accessories, such as a sat-nav.
As far as I can tell, the sat nav and other accessories supply information to the MFD by means of the CAN bus.
I was wondering if it would be possible to make a sort of homemade controller module to be able to feed anything I wanted to the MFD. For example, to add my own screens or control screens that are already there but not accessible.
I suppose the question is if I can figure out what messages are transmitted to which models on the CAN bus to control the various menus.
Does anyone know if this is possible or tried it themselves?

I’m fairly sure I’ve seen this kind of aftermarket module for sale for Audis, and in theory, it should also work on a Volkswagen. As far as I remember it allows an EGT gauge, boost gauge, or a split-screen of both. I can’t remember the name of the manufacturer, but if you can track it down it would probably be compatible with your VW.
