Hello, I’m looking into getting a used Skoda Kamiq, and I’m wondering if anyone has had any long-term experience with them? Specifically, have there been any reliability issues or unexpected maintenance costs that I should be aware of?

    The Skoda Kamiq is generally regarded as a practical and economical compact SUV with a focus on value, but, like any used car, there are important considerations regarding long-term reliability and maintenance costs.

    Reliability: Long-term Owner Experience
    * Reliability Scores: The Kamiq earns a reliability rating of around 92.7% but placed 18th out of 23 in its class in a major UK reliability survey. Around 35% of owners reported some issues, mainly related to the engine, fuel system, and the infotainment (sat-nav) system.
    * Common Issues:
    - Electrical/Infotainment Glitches: Occasional screen freezes, Bluetooth, or sensor glitches are not uncommon and can be persistent.
    - Engine/Fuel System: Especially with diesel models, recurring exhaust system and DPF (diesel particulate filter) issues have been reported, sometimes requiring repeated repairs.
    - DSG Transmission: Jerky or delayed shifts can develop if the automatic gearbox isn't serviced on schedule; listen for hesitation or clunky shifts on test drives.
    - Other Concerns: Some owners mention wind noise, premature suspension wear (esp. on rough roads), excess tire wear from 30,000–50,000km, and rare HVAC or interior electrical faults.
    - Cold Start Noise: Three-cylinder petrol engines can sound “tractor-like” when cold, but this should vanish after the engine warms up and is generally not a cause for worry in itself.

    Unexpected Maintenance Costs
    * Routine Upkeep: Regular maintenance—oil, filters, brake fluid—is comparable to class peers (see below for service packs and costs).
    * Unexpected Repairs:
    - Transmission service: Can cost £300–£800 if out of warranty, higher if major repairs are needed.
    - Suspension repairs: £200–£600 depending on the fault.
    - Electrical/glitch rectification: These repairs vary widely with infotainment/software fixes often handled under warranty, but expect £100–£400 for more involved electrical work.

    - Fuel System (diesel models): Repairs for DPF or EGR issues can be £400–£1,000 if out of warranty.
    * Service Packs: Skoda offers used car service packs (~£1,300 for 4 years/75,000 miles), which can help contain maintenance costs.
    * Warranty: Standard warranty is 3 years/60,000 miles, but extensions are available up to 5 years/100,000 miles for an additional fee. This can be worthwhile for peace of mind, especially for DSG-equipped or high-mileage examples.

    Owner Sentiment
    * Owners appreciate the Kamiq's practicality, comfort, fuel efficiency, and tech, but common frustrations involve persistent electronic glitches and, on occasion, waiting for parts or lengthy repairs at dealerships. Most report that if the car is maintained by the book, long-term costs remain reasonable.

    Advice for Used Buyers
    * Insist on full service history: Especially for DSG (auto) boxes and timing belts on petrol engines.
    * Check for recalls and software updates: Make sure the infotainment and driver-assist systems are up to date.
    * Test all electrics/electronics: Verify all screens, parking sensors, and Bluetooth work without glitches.
    * Diesel models: Think twice unless you do regular long trips—DPF and exhaust issues are more common on short-trip usage.

    In summary: The Kamiq does well on running costs and is generally reliable, but prioritize examples with strong service records and have all electronics checked before purchase. Most issues are not catastrophic, but recurring electrical niggles are the most common complaint. Maintenance costs align with rivals if the car is properly maintained, but out-of-warranty repairs on the DSG gearbox or diesel exhaust can be expensive if neglected.
