Is it legal to have a dog in a car seat? SEAT Ibiza IV Schrägheck (6J5, 6P1)

I have a new puppy and I am trying to figure out the best way to keep him safe in my Ibiza. I have seen those little dog booster car seats online, but I want to make sure I am staying on the right side of the law. Is it actually legal to use a dog car seat while driving in the UK?

Hi @ruby___c. The law is not about the specific seat you buy, but rather the restraint itself. Rule 57 of the Highway Code states that you must have your dog suitably restrained so they cannot distract you or cause injury to anyone during a sudden stop.

Whatever method you choose, the goal is to make sure they do not move around. I see so many people driving with dogs wandering between the seats, which is a major distraction.

@jeffreyOsborne23 definitely. It is not just about the dog getting hurt, but about keeping your focus on the road. Distracted driving is a real issue.

I used to let my dog sit in the passenger seat, but I realized quickly that it was dangerous. Switching to a back seat harness setup was the best move for us.

That makes sense. I think I will go with a crash tested harness and a proper seatbelt attachment instead of just the booster seat. It seems like the safest approach for my setup.

Exactly what @Harry.B said. Those booster seats are just cushioned areas. You need to combine that seat with a harness that actually clicks into the seatbelt buckle. Without the harness, they are not secured.

Thanks @Neil.HugheS for the clarification. Are there specific brands or types of harnesses you would suggest looking for?

Look for something that says crash tested. It is worth spending a bit more on a brand like EzyDog or similar automotive safety options rather than just standard pet shop gear. It makes a big difference in a collision.

@teRRy.jacKSon09 is right. Safety is the main priority here. Keeping the dog settled in the Ibiza prevents the distraction that causes most of these accidents.

Personally I prefer a crate for my dog. It is arguably safer than a harness because it gives them their own protected space and keeps them from becoming a projectile.

@fish-chips I agree that crates are the gold standard for safety if you have the boot space for it. Just make sure it is strapped down tight so it does not slide around.

I have used a harness for years. It works well and keeps the dog from jumping around the car. Just make sure the harness itself is sturdy because cheap ones can snap during an emergency.
