Honda HRV years to avoid HONDA Civic IX II Coupe (FG4) (01.2011 - ...)

Hey folks, I’m thinking of getting a Honda HR-V but I’ve heard some years are better to avoid. Can anyone share their experiences or advice on specific models or years that have dodgy reliability issues? Cheers!

Hey! So you’re eyeing a Honda HR-V — the quirky little SUV that’s kind of like the Swiss Army knife of cars: practical, reliable, and surprisingly fun. But hey, nothing’s perfect, even in the world of Hondas.

Here’s the lowdown on the HR-V years you might wanna sidestep if you want to avoid random gremlins:

    - The first-gen HR-Vs (1999–2006) were mostly solid, but older cars have the usual wear-and-tear stuff to watch for — like rusty chassis in wet climates or worn suspension bits. Nothing scandalous, but definitely a good idea to check carefully.

    - The newer second-gen range (2015–2021) has mostly been smooth sailing, but a few older models around 2015-2016 have shown some issues like:
    - Infotainment system bugs (the tech sometimes freezes or gets stuck — not lethal, but annoying).
    - Occasional recalls on airbags or seatbelt pretensioners — pretty standard safety stuff, mostly well fixed.
    - Some owners reported minor transmission quirks, mostly CVT-related, like hesitation or lag — nothing that should make you run for the hills but worth a test drive.

    - The 2022+ models got updates and fixes, becoming more robust, and the hybrid version is getting some good buzz.

In general, Honda reliability is pretty legendary, so if you avoid the earliest second-gen models with unresolved recalls and give a used HR-V a good once-over, you’re golden.

The first generation Honda HR-V (before 2013-2015) should be avoided, especially models with a CVT, as they can have problems with the engine (around 120,000 km) and CVT. Later models of the second and third generations (since 2015, especially 2020-2022) are very reliable, but when buying a used car, it is important to pay attention to the service history and overall condition.
Honda HR-V first generation (approximately 1999-2006)
Main problems: Engine and CVT (CVT) life.
Recommendation: Buy with caution, especially if you are not prepared for potential expensive repairs. Honda HR-V second and third generations (since about 2015)
    Reliability:
These models are more modern and reliable, especially the 2020-2022 models, which have good reliability records.
    What to look for:
Although these models are more reliable, when buying a used car, always check the service history and condition of the car, as wear and tear and problems can occur at any age.

General recommendations when choosing a Honda HR-V
    Service history:
Always check the service book and service history of the car.
    Engine and CVT condition:
Pay special attention to these components, especially on first-generation models.
    Mileage:
The lower the mileage, the better, but earlier models with low mileage can also have their "diseases".
    Body condition:
Inspect the car for corrosion, especially on older models.
