The frequency of (scheduled) filter replacement is determined by the vehicle manufacturer. Some manufacturers recommend to change it every 30,000 km, other — every 120,000 km. If the filter is installed outside the fuel tank, it should be changed more often. You’ll also have to change the fuel filter earlier than expected if foreign particles or large amount of water get into the tank. If this is the case, the tank should be flushed. The fuel pump may need to be replaced.
The fuel filter of diesel-powered engines undergoes the highest loads in winter — thickened fuel passes through the filter media. This is why it’s better to carry out preventive replacement of the diesel fuel filter in autumn.
