Does my 4 year old need a high back booster seat? SEAT Ibiza IV Schrägheck (6J5, 6P1)
- @mar-mur07.07.2026 09:41MemberI would definitely recommend going for a high back booster rather than a backless one. The side-impact protection they provide is so much better for a child that age. Backless cushions really do not offer much protection in the event of a side collision and they can be quite uncomfortable for sleeping on long journeys. My own child uses a high back model and it feels much safer in our car.Spare parts for your SEAT Ibiza IV Hatchback (6J5, 6P1) (03.2008 - 12.2017)

We looked into this when our daughter hit four and the difference between the two styles is huge. A good high back booster will ensure the seat belt sits correctly across the chest and shoulder, rather than creeping up towards their neck. It keeps them much more secure.Recommended products for this topic
- @【A】【L】【A】【N】07.07.2026 14:16@IsaWillMemberJust to add a word of caution, never buy these second-hand unless you know the history. You really do not know if a used seat was involved in an accident. Small internal cracks or stress in the plastic might not be visible to the naked eye but could ruin the safety in a crash.
- @thomas_holloway2307.07.2026 11:16MemberThanks for the input. Are these seats tricky to install in a hatchback like the Ibiza? I have heard some people find them finicky to secure compared to the old harness systems.
- @mmm_m0rgan07.07.2026 12:01@thomas_holloway23MemberNot really. Most modern ones are quite straightforward. If your car has ISOFIX points, I highly recommend using a seat that utilizes them. It makes the seat much more stable, even when the child is not in it, and it gives me a lot of peace of mind knowing the booster is properly anchored.
- @SarcasmKing07.07.2026 14:01MemberI would suggest looking into the Britax Römer range. They make some very solid high back boosters that fit well in smaller cars. We have used them for years and they seem to hold up very well to daily use while keeping the child properly positioned throughout the ride.
- @thomas_holloway2308.07.2026 17:56@SarcasmKingMemberThat is great advice. I will look into the Britax models and check for ISOFIX compatibility in my car. Thanks for all the advice everyone, it has been really helpful.
- @X2307.07.2026 17:16MemberExactly. We made the move to a high back seat at four as well. It also helps if the child is prone to falling asleep in the car because the side wings act like a little pillow. It keeps their head from lolling over, which is a big bonus for comfort on longer trips.
- @johnson_2007.07.2026 17:56@X23MemberThat head support is such a game changer. I remember when we switched, it made such a difference to how she slept on the motorway. It just makes the whole experience less stressful for everyone in the car.
- @FREDHALL08.07.2026 19:56MemberMake sure you check your child's height against the manufacturer guidelines too. Sometimes they reach the age milestone before they hit the height requirement for the seat to work as intended. Always check those labels carefully before you make the switch.
- @b_diXon08.07.2026 20:11@FREDHALLMemberFred is spot on. I measured my lad against the guide before buying our last seat. It takes two seconds but it ensures you are getting the right product for their specific development stage.
- @grace.rob.1209.07.2026 00:11MemberSeems like the general consensus is to go for a high back booster with ISOFIX if your car supports it. It provides the best balance of safety and comfort for a four-year-old. Best of luck with the new seat search.

My son is turning 4 soon and he is currently in his toddler seat with a 5-point harness. I am wondering if it is time to switch to a high back booster seat? I have seen backless ones but heard mixed things about them. What are your thoughts on this transition?
