The parking brake is adjusted from the passenger compartment using the adjusting nut.
To do this, the centre console must be removed to gain access to the adjusting nut.
Raise the rear of the body with a jack and install the support legs
For cars with drum brakes
remove both rear drums, make sure the knurled adjusting wheel on the adjuster post rotates freely in both directions. If it gets stuck, the brake pads and strut must be removed and repaired. If everything is in order, turn the adjusting wheel five or six teeth back to slightly reduce the diameter of the brake pads. Make sure the parking brake cables move freely by pulling on the front edges. Also make sure that the operating levers on the driven rear brake pads return to their original position with the stops in contact with the edge of the fin of the driven shoe.
tighten the adjusting nut on the parking brake lever operating rod so that each rear brake starts to move as soon as the parking brake lever is moved between the first and second ratchet slot. In this case, the stops will still be in contact with the brake pads when the parking brake is installed in the first slot of the ratchet. But as soon as the parking brake is in the second slot of the ratchet mechanism, the stops will not come into contact with the pads. Reinstall the brake drums. Once the vehicle is on the ground, depress the brake pedal several times to adjust the clearance between the brake pads and the drum. Once the vehicle is on the ground, depress the brake pedal several times to adjust the clearance between the brake pads and drum.
Car models equipped with rear disc brakes:
Check that the parking brake cables move freely by pulling on the front edges, then check that the operating levers on the rear brake callipers move smoothly.
Move the calliper operating levers as far back as possible, then tighten the adjusting nut on the parking brake lever cable until the play is eliminated from both cables. After asking for help from an assistant, adjust the nut so that the operating lever on each rear calliper starts to move when the parking brake lever moves between the first and second slot on the ratchet.
