Hey folks!

Just wondering which years of the Audi Q5 should I steer clear of? Any specific issues to watch out for?

Cheers!

It is best to avoid the first generations of the Audi Q5 (2008–2012, 8R platform), especially with the following engines:
    * 2.0 TFSI (EA888 Gen 1/2) – oil consumption, problems with the timing chain and turbocharger.

    * 3.0 TFSI (Supercharged) – expensive compressor repairs, oil leaks.

    * 2.0 TDI diesel engines (EA189) – problems with the particulate filter (DPF), EGR, risk of ‘dieselgate’.

    What is more reliable:
    * Restyling 2013+ (improved timing chain on petrol engines).

    * 3.0 TDI (except AdBlue in later models) – the most durable.

Common problems: electrical wiring, seals, suspension (especially pneumatic). Before buying, be sure to check for faults and take a test drive.

You should generally steer clear of the 2012, 2014, and 2018 Audi Q5 model years in the UK due to significant reliability issues and high complaint rates.

    Key Problem Years and Issues
2012 Audi Q5.This is considered the least reliable model year overall. It has the highest number of consumer complaints, particularly for:

    - Excessive engine oil consumption leading to costly repairs (average repair cost over $900).
    - Engine failures and related problems.
    - Airbag faults and sensor malfunctions (over 50% of complaints).
    - Air and water leaks, strange noises (squeaks and rattles), fuel system and emissions issues.
    - Multiple recalls (six or more) including for coolant pumps and safety systems.
    - Annual maintenance and repair costs are relatively high, often exceeding $900.

2014 Audi Q5. This year is rated as one of the worst Audi Q5 models ever made:

    - Highest number of complaints on record for the Q5.
    - Severe engine oil consumption problems with repair costs soaring over $3,200 on average.
    - Engine failures and emissions problems.
    - Recalls for faulty coolant pumps and other safety issues.
    - Owner satisfaction scores dropped significantly.

2018 Audi Q5. The first year of the second generation had a spike in problems:

    - Electrical system faults were widespread, including inoperable turn signals, warning lights, and engine start failures.
    - Six recalls issued for various safety and reliability issues.
    - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued urgent warnings advising against driving some 2018 Q5s due to safety concerns.

    Other Years to Avoid
    - 2011 and 2010 models also had numerous recalls and engine problems, including early timing chain failures and transmission issues.
    - 2013 is somewhat better but still had electrical and steering problems, so caution is advised.
    - 2009–2012 models suffered from suspension wear, sunroof leaks, transmission failures, and electrical faults.

    Most Reliable Years
    - The 2013 Audi Q5 is considered the most reliable first-generation model, with fewer complaints and mostly minor recalls.
    - Models from 2017 to 2019 and later generations show improved reliability, styling, and safety.

Avoid 2012 and 2014 Audi Q5s due to severe engine oil consumption, engine failures, and high repair costs. The 2018 model also has significant electrical and safety issues making it a risky buy. If you want a used Q5, the 2013 model year and later second-generation models (2017 onward) are safer bets, with fewer complaints and better overall reliability.

Always check for completed recall work and consider a thorough pre-purchase inspection to avoid costly surprises.
